Why does my dog pick one family member as their favorite person?

Good question! It's one of those times where it would be neat if you could talk to your dog and they answered. Dogs, just like people, can get favorites without any real rhyme or reason to it. However, if you're trying to bond a bit more closely to Oscar, offering a favorite treat every time you spend time together, or playing with a favorite toy may help get him a little closer to you.

Great question. Most dogs respond best to the family member who spends the most time doing things such as feeding, walking, bathing. It sounds like you are that person. I'm sure she loves you but your Mom may have a special bond of some kind that seems to attract you dog's attention. Continue to work on it and over time find the special things such as rubbing her ears, or massaging her back, that makes you the person she wants to be around most. In my opinion this is a reflection of Danny's personality - some dogs are 'one person' dogs who are very attached to one family member. If you adopted another dog it might prefer your wife, or might seem to like everyone equally. You might develop a stronger bond with a new dog if you spend more time training it, but i don't think there is any guarantee that your relationship with a new dog would be the same as it is with Danny.

If you are the one who feeds them and has the most interaction with them, than that's likely why they prefer you to her. You are showing them the love, care, and attention they need, and they are trying to reward you for that with their love attention. If you want them to have more of an attachment to your girlfriend, then I agree she should be feeding them and have more interaction with them.

While some breeds are more aloof than others, and some are more gregarious, it seems as if Reks is outgoing with other family members so I doubt it's a breed issue. There may be an imbalance in the relationship between you and him. Try assuming all of the dog-related chores at home: you be the one to feed him, walk him, give him treats (not too many!) etc. for a week and see if that helps. Ask the rest of the family to be cooperative in this. I would also suggest that you enroll with him in a basic dog obedience class, where you and he will learn to work together as a team. Any training you do with a dog strengthens your bond with him, assumng your methods are gentle, consistent and kind.

Great news that Sky is so friendly with new people! Dogs will have favourites in the same way that we will and there is very little you can do to discourage this. Try to spend quality time playing with her and doing some reward training and this may help to refocus her attentions!

How cute! Some dogs just love the texture and warmth of certain things over others. Just like we probably have our favorite pair of jeans and favorite blanket they can have favorite toys and beds as well. Plus if it is blanket you use often it has your scent on it. Also, he is likely excited that he gets to cuddle with you. :)
