Why does my dog choose one person as their absolute favorite?

This is hard to predict because every dog has a different type of personality. Some dogs are outgoing and interactive, whereas others are more introverted, calm and mellow. So the dogs personality often syncs with their human counterparts personality, which results in a special bond between the two. However in other cases the dog just prefers one person over the other, for no obvious reason at all.

Great question. Most dogs respond best to the family member who spends the most time doing things such as feeding, walking, bathing. It sounds like you are that person. I'm sure she loves you but your Mom may have a special bond of some kind that seems to attract you dog's attention. Continue to work on it and over time find the special things such as rubbing her ears, or massaging her back, that makes you the person she wants to be around most. Great news that Sky is so friendly with new people! Dogs will have favourites in the same way that we will and there is very little you can do to discourage this. Try to spend quality time playing with her and doing some reward training and this may help to refocus her attentions!

I would recommend that you consider having your mom give him treats and as much affection as possible. Usually with treats he will most likely get to like her company more and more. That has to be frustrating for you! Dogs have different personalities, and although most dogs are very bonded to their primary caretaker, some dogs seem to take that person for granted. Your dog might just assume that you will always be around. and these other people are more exciting. To increase the bond with Maximus, I recommend you spend quality time together alone. This may be walking, cuddling. or playing with toys. I also recommend working on training sessions. This will help teach him to pay attention to you. If you are the one who feeds them and has the most interaction with them, than that's likely why they prefer you to her. You are showing them the love, care, and attention they need, and they are trying to reward you for that with their love attention. If you want them to have more of an attachment to your girlfriend, then I agree she should be feeding them and have more interaction with them.

How cute! Some dogs just love the texture and warmth of certain things over others. Just like we probably have our favorite pair of jeans and favorite blanket they can have favorite toys and beds as well. Plus if it is blanket you use often it has your scent on it. Also, he is likely excited that he gets to cuddle with you. :)
