My dog's penis smells awful and he licks it. What should I do?

This is likely a coincidence than anything. He could have eaten something at the park to make his breath smell back. It is unlikely from her prepuce/penis. If he produced some smegma which can sometimes smell bad. Even neutered dogs can produce this occasionally. I would try to brush his mouth or add a water additive to try to freshen his breath. If the smell continues or if he continues to lick his prepuce/penis a lot I would have your vet check both out to ensure they look okay. I hope this helps!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Causes of licking the prepuce/penis area could be a urinary tract infection, crystals in the urine, stones in the urinary tract, or trauma to the area. I see the area you are referring to on Oliver. Unfortunately it is difficult to tell what is going on by the picture alone. This may be an area of inflammation or infection on Oliver. If he is licking the area more than normal, I would be worried that he may develop an infection if it's not infected already. I would recommend taking him in to your vet to have him checked out. He may need an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory to resolve the issue.
