My dog licked his penis, his breath smells bad. Is it an infection?

It sounds like he might have an infection. Your vet can examine him and prescribe an antibiotic, if needed. If you see any discharge then you could clean it with a DOUXO® Chlorhexidine Pads and see if that helps. Otherwise, see if your vet can see him before Wednesday so treatment can be started.

If his breath smells like fish I would recommend having his anal glands checked. I would also recommend having your veterinarian shave the hair off of his prepuce and check a urine sample. Hello. If the split looks healed, & this seems to be what you are describing, then I would not be concerned at all, especially if the prepuce covers the entire penis. Male dogs, especially unneutered ones, will lick quite a bit. That is normal. There is a possibility of an infection within the sheath, but your veterinarian will need to see if this is the case & if necessary, prescribe an antibiotic to treat. Even with minimal tartar buildup and gingivitis, a dog’s breath may smell without daily/regular tooth brushing (as with humans!). I recommend purchasing an enzymatic (chicken flavored) doggie toothpaste from your local pet store or veterinarian and brushing Marley’s teeth daily (with the enzymatic toothpaste he will not need to rinse and spit). I also recommend bringing him back to have his anal glands specially checked via rectal exam as vets don’t always do a rectal exam on every visit and I have seen dogs with very full anal glands that have not been scooting or licking as per the owner. You can start by bathing that area with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. An infection or ulcers or bad kidneys can cause changes in the breathe. An infection can be under the gums line affecting the tooth root that will not be able to be seen unless there are xrays taken. I would have him seen by your vet to see if this is the case and a simple blood panel can check his kidney values for you
