My Doberman's penis bleeding for days, is vet's advice okay?

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

If Thor has not had any abdominal x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound performed I would definitely recommend having these tests performed to figure out why there is blood dripping from his penis. I would also recommend a trial of an antibiotic and an antiinflammatory to see if this resolves with symptomatic treatment. If not, then neutering may be the treatment if this is a prostate related issue such as prostatitis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! One of the best ways to stop bleeding is with ice. I suggest you ice the prepuce/penis for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day for the next day or so. I really do think though the he should be re-examined by a vet if there is that much blood. That doesn't sound normal to me. Keep him from licking it if at all possible and if he is having any trouble urinating then get him seen by your vet ASAP. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, it is not normal to bleed so profusely , I would definitely have him reassessed ! Could it be that the penis has been swollen for some time ? If so, it is better to have him checked over sooner rather than later as permanent damage to the penis can occur that can eventually end up in a an operation. Remember that Euro’s breed tolerates pain much better than other breeds but even a small injury causes a lot of pain in this area which is extremely well vascularised. Hope you can have him checked over ASAP.

If the bleeding from Lucky's penis has gotten worse and/or not resolved at all you may need to bring him back to your vet for a recheck. The penis and prepuce are very vascular (meaning they have lots of blood vessels) and so can bleed easily. If the bleeding hasn't subsided at all there may be a larger vessel that is damaged that may need to be sutured closed to prevent any further bleeding. I would be sure to keep the cone on Lucky as well until you get everything figured out so he won't lick excessively down there and cause more irritation.

This could be due to an inflammation which can have either a traumatic or an infective origin. Urinary tract inflammation could be present.
