My male dog is bleeding from his penis after mating, is it serious?

This could be due to an inflammation which can have either a traumatic or an infective origin. Urinary tract inflammation could be present. It could be from an infection, irritation/trauma, or possibly bladder stones. Your vet can test a urine sample for infection and then prescribe medications to help treat the problem. You could also consider having him neutered to help decrease the problem in the future.

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! Bite wounds are serious because these can easily result in more trauma than what seems apparent and also in an infection. If there was evidence of blood before, I am concerned that there could have been significant trauma. Blood from the penis can be a result of a urinarh tract infection, prostate issue, bladder stones, or trauma. I recommend having Nemo examined by a veterinarian and having a urine sample checked to see if an infection is present. He may need X-rays to rule out a bladder stone. It would be best to have him examined as soon as possible as these issues can progress quickly. He may need a prescription medication like an antibiotic to treat the underlying issue. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I am concerned that he continuing to bleed. A clot should have formed by now unless the trauma is too much or he has a bleeding disorder. With him being a doberman, I would strongly suggest checking him for any bleeding disorder such as von willebrand disease. Your vet can test for this with a specific test. I would also check general blood work and potentially sedate him and check the area out more. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Pip may be causing trauma to his penis or prepuce by being too aggressive about humping. To avoid future trauma do not allow him to have the bear. He may need an examination by a veterinarian to ensure he has not caused excessive damage to himself or to ensure he does not need pain medication or antibiotics. At minimum please make sure he can urinate normally and does not lick around his prepuce or penis. If he is having any issues or the bleeding persists he will need to see a veterinarian.
