Why do my small dogs pee on rugs at night after house training?

I recommend to kennel train the dogs and kennel them at night or have them shut in your room if they will not potty in your room. If they will potty in your room then kenneling them is the best thing to do as well. After about a month you can try to let them out again and see if they have stopped the behavior. This is probably a behavioral issue, but the first step is always to rule out any medical reason for the inappropriate elimination issues. Both dogs need to have a full physical exam and urinalysis tests to make sure neither one have any obvious cause for not being able to wait to go outside, like a urinary tract infection or bladder stones. You can try to keep both dogs in separate areas at night so you can identify which dog is having the issue. Unfortunately, if there is no medical explanation then one or both dogs have gotten in the habit of doing this, and you'll have to break that habit somehow. You may need to replace the carpet with tile, or keep the dogs in the kitchen or other area at night to get the culprit out of the habit. Hope that helps!

I am sorry that you are having to go through this! If I read the question correctly.... They were both not having accidents for an entire year and then it started again... That certainly seems strange. The first thing that I like to do is rule out a medical problem, especially in Scooter. Kidney problems, bladder infections, diabetes, Cushings Dz are just a few of the conditions that can cause excess urination. If he has a medical problem and is urinating in the house, your puppy might be just thinking it is ok to urinate in the house. I would try to see if you can figure out if it is small puddles very often or larger puddles. The veterinarian can collect a urine sample and run a urinalysis to help diagnose a problem. They may see something like a low specific gravity (concentration of urine) and need to run blood work. You can also take your puppy in to have a urinalysis done as well. If it is not a medical problem, then you will have to try to re-train them. The puppy will most likely be easier. I would recommend going back to crate training. The places where the accidents have happened have to be cleaned very well. You may need to keep Scooter in a small room with an easy to clean floor when your are gone. Good Luck! 3 months is still EXTREMELY young, and I would not consider a 3 month old puppy to be fully house-trained. Any new situation can always cause a regression in training until worked on, and some dogs may have accidents on occasion until they are old enough and their bladder is fully developed. I would give her a few minutes in between going outside, and letting her on the bed at night, to give her a chance to settle down and relax. It's very possible that the fun of being on the bed is just too exciting (or scary) and is causing her to have an accident as many puppies may experience excitement or submission urination, even if they've already gone potty outside. Once she is calm, you can put her on the bed, but try not to make a big deal out of it, to see if keeping her relaxed helps. If she does immediately pee, she may just need to stay off the bed for a while longer until she is a bit older. An enzymatic cleaner can also be used with any bedding when it is washed to help break down any urine particles that may be attracting her.

All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

This is typical puppy behavior and will likely resolve once Eva is potty trained more as she gets older. Using Puppy pads and keeping her in a crate through the night may help with this behavior. This is a very common problem with puppies :) It sounds like the pen he is in is probably too large - it gives him too much space to work with, and makes it easy for him to wake up and find a spot to pee, rather than either holding it or whining to let you know he needs to go out. Instead of the pen, I would recommend having him sleep in a crate in your bedroom at night. Most puppies instinctively do not want to pee where they are sleeping, so in most cases this means that the pup will whine to wake you up if he needs to go out during the night. As he gets older and his bladder control improves, he should start to be able to hold it all night with no problems.
