How to stop my puppy's nighttime potty accidents in the bedroom?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is not an uncommom issue. I recommend that you try the training pad spray that you put on the pad. This would help your pup identify the right place to do her business. You can get this at your local pet store. Given that she learned how to let you guys know when she wants to go outside, she is for sure very smart so I'm sure she will learn this as well. Try to keep the blankets off the flour at least for now while she learns. Remember to praise and reward her when you notice the desired behavior. Good luck!

I would recommend against puppy training pads. Sometimes when you train them on puppy training pads as they age then still urinate in the house on paper when you want them to go outside. If you plan on taking Raven outside to go to the bathroom I would recommend starting to do it now. Raven is so very young that he will not be trained for a few months. Don't stress, it will happen. I would recommend crate training: Many people state that crate training is cruel but a crate is a safe haven for your puppy and many dogs use it as a place to rest and recovery after a long day. This method is extremely effective when house training and helps when you cannot watch Raven. You must choose a crate that Raven can stand up, sit down and turn around. Getting a crate bigger then this can lead Raven to urinate or defecate on one side of the crate while sleeping on the other side. A crate should only create a positive environment. Never use the crate for punishment. Despite what many people think do not line the crate with blankets or beds. The reason is Raven can urinate on the blankets and beds which can soak up the urine and he can bury the stool. Keeping Raven in the crate when you cannot keep 100% eye on him is important. Every time you take him out of the crate take him on a walk to make sure they go to the bathroom and give positive reinforcement if he does. If they do not eliminate while you are outside or on the puppy pad then put Raven back in the crate for another 20minutes. After 20 minutes take him out once again to try. If Raven does go to the bathroom make sure you take time to play with him and when you have to turn your back again put them back in the crate. If you catch him having an accident in the house tell Raven no and then take him outside or to the puppy pad and praise him if he goes. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! California is only 9 weeks old and house training isn't close to being accomplished yet. I wouldn't house train California to go in the house at all. Some dogs do n ot care if they eliminate in their bedding or not. I would ramp up house training: take her out as often as you can and when she goes outside verbally praise her, give her a yummy treat and play with her outside, teach her how to rings bell to go outside, block all rooms she can go in to to soil, clean all soiled areas with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle, crate her when you are not home and at night, wake up 1-2 times over night to take her out, have someone come while you are at work to take her out and when you are home she should be leashed to an adult at all times. If she doesn't go when you take her out she should be put in her crate and you should try again 20 mins later. You should do this for 2-3 months with out an accident before you become less strict an allow her access to all rooms in your house unobserved. California is very young and to be 100% house broken at 9 weeks of age isn't normal for any puppy. I hope this helps and I wish you and California the best!

All rooms with doors should be closed and she needs to be gated to be kept in your site. Or she needs to be leashed to an adult until this behavior has stopped. The area she is soiling needs to be cleaned with an enzymatic pet cleaner, like Nature's Miracle. She needs to be take out frequently and verbally praised, as well as given treats, when she goes outside. Play with her for 5-10 mins. If she doesn't go outside she is crated or leashed to an adult until you take her out again. This training should go on for 3 months and she can have free reign of the house once there are no accidents for those 3 months. You can have her urine checked for crystals or infection by your Vet and consider having her spayed to see if that helps. I wish you the best!

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. Many dogs need to be crated at night to prevent accidents until they are 1-2 years old, so this is not unexpected - I would simply go ahead and crate her at night for now :) Once she's a bit older, you can gradually try giving her more freedom in the house at night. Excited peeing is usually something that puppies grow out of once they're older. In the meantime, you can help by ignoring her for a few minutes when you first get home and asking your visitors to do the same. Once she calms down a bit, you can gently pet her and say hello. Leaning over dogs to greet them also tends to make this problem worse, so crouching down to say hi may also be helpful. You can also take her outside to potty just before visitors come over to help decrease the chances of an accident. It's also very important not to punish her for this behavior, as she can't help it - corrections will only make her more anxious, and often makes the urination worse.
