Why is my 5-year-old adopted dog peeing inside despite going out?

I would recommend getting a crate for Sirius and crate training him. This means keeping him in the crate all day and taking him out to go to the bathroom. If he goes to the bathroom then leaving him out of the crate when you can keep 100% watch on him. If you end up having to turn your back for 1 second I would put him back in the crate. He needs to learn he cannot mark around the house. I would also recommend bringing him to the vet to rule out any medical issues if there is any, for example, a urinary tract infection. If this is a relatively new problem, Nikki may have an underlying medical condition - like a urinary tract infection. I suggest you have her examined by your vet and have a urine test done to check for infection or other underlying medical problem. If you can rule out a medical problem then you can assume it is behavioral, in which case, you should consult with a professional, in-home dog trainer. It is very hard to potty train a dog this age without professional help.

In that case, I would recommend taking him to the vet for a check-up. He/she can do blood work and a urinalysis to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

Spanking is never recommended as a form of training. Ideally, Paco should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose any underlying medical cause for his behavior. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral issues. Consider crate training Paco to "remind" him he shouldn't do his business inside. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down. If he isn't on a schedule for going outside, start one. Dogs thrive on routine and he may respond favorably to a schedule. Don't leave him unsupervised indoors. Use a leash and attach it to your hip. Watch for his cues to go such as circling, whining or sniffing about. If possible, restrict access to the bathroom or other areas where he is going. Use an enzymatic cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle, to thoroughly clean soiled areas. When he goes outdoors, have a small treat ready and praise/reward him consistently when he does his business in the appropriate place.

Hello. This may be a behavioral issue, but the only way to know definitively is to rule out all possible medical issues. Has Charlie had a urinalysis done? This would show the presence of bacteria, crystals or other possible abnormal cells in the urinary bladder. Then, steam clean the area where he pees or use a enzymatic cleaner labeled for pet urine. Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Bo is still quite young and him urinating inside is something that he should eventually grow out with training. Positive reinforcement with treats whenever he urinates outside and defecates outside will help reinforce him going outside. I've had great success with recommending Fresh Patch. This is a patch of grass in a cardboard box with absorbent material underneath the grass and you place this in the house. Bo will use this real grass to go to the bathroom short term. I would recommend starting by placing the grass in the area where he has been urinating and then gradually moving the patch of grass closer and closer to the door to the outside until eventually the grass patch is outside of the house and he is using it there. I would recommend neutering Choco. This may be behavioral. I would also check blood work on him to make sure that his kidneys are functioning properly. After checking his blood work and neutering him then I would recommend crate training Choco. This means leaving Choco in a cage when you cannot 100% watch him.
