Why is my dog still peeing blood after antibiotics & constipated?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 21 lbs

My dog has had a bladder infection for a little while he has just finished a course of antibiotics and is still having blood in urine as well he seems to be having trouble pooping. When he urinates he does not pass a lot of urine just smaller amounts but is passing more than just dribbles

I'm sorry to hear that Snare has been having so many urinary issues. There are several possible causes for his ongoing bloody urine and straining. One possible cause is that the bacteria causing his urinary tract infection are resistant to the antibiotic being used. Others include the possibility of prostate issues, bladder stones, crystals or a bladder mass, which could be partially blocking the urethra or causing discomfort. I strongly recommend taking Snare to his vet first thing in the morning for further evaluation. Your vet will likely recommend additional diagnostic tests, which may include a urine culture, x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound. If Snare becomes unable to urinate or is straining, but unable to pass any urine, this is an emergency and should be addressed by an emergency vet immediately. There are a few possibilities: one would be that the bacteria present in the urine is resistant to the chosen antibiotic. This is becoming more of a problem as antibiotic resistance grows, and your veterinarian may want to take a sample for culture to determine what bacteria is causing the problem and what drug(s) it is susceptible to. Bladder stones or a bladder or prostate tumor would be another possibility. I would recommend rechecking with your vet - they may recommend blood work, x-rays, or an ultrasound as a next step along with a urine culture.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. Antibiotics typically improve UTI signs within 1-2 days so Bakka could have something else like a stone in his urinary tract or even an issue like a prostate gland infection or rarely cancer. As the antibiotics are not working and a stone could cause him to be unable to urinate and have kidney damage, Bakka should be seen by a veterinarian.

I would recommend taking Crybaby back to the vet for re-evaluation. Some dogs can have recurrent UTIs, but often they are secondary to a bigger issue, such as bladder stones, cancer, or anatomical issues. Another round of antibiotics may help, but may just cover up the bigger issue, again.

Why is my senior dog's bloody urine returning after antibiotics?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chocolate Bar. 18.5 years of age-what an amazingly long life you have given him! The recurrent blood in the urine is concerning though. There is a chance that he has developed bladder cancer. I would recommend having an abdominal ultrasound to visualize his entire urinary tract to look for any abnormalities. If there is a suspicious growth, then the radiologist can collect a sample for testing. In the meantime, continue his medications as directed. Good luck!

Blood in the urine can have a variety of causes, including infection, bladder or kidney stones, a sterile bladder inflammatory process, a growth, prostate issues, or an underlying medical issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by a veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (urinalysis, bloodwork, bladder ultrasound), and try to isolate the cause of his issue to come up with any treatment that may be needed. My dog has a UTI. Why is she bleeding after starting antibiotics?

Frequent licking and blood in the urine are signs of an infection. However if it flared after the start of the antibiotics then I would pursue further testing. Did they do anytime sample tonxhexk for cells and crystals and see what bacteria what present? From there you need an X-ray or an ultrasound to make sure there are no bladder stones as this can require surgery or the problem will keep occurring without.
