Why is my dog's urine still bloody with tissue after meds?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. This could be due to an infection that is resistant to the antibiotics being given or it could be something else like stones or a tumor. I highly recommend that you consider taking Tao to his veterinarian for reevaluation. Diagnostics that should be considered at this point include a urine culture to make sure that if there is an infection, you know which antibiotic would be best to use. I'm sorry that Daisy is having this problem. It sounds like you are doing everything right. I have a few suggestions for you. If your vet has not performed a urinalysis, that should be done. If there is still evidence of infection after 2 weeks of Augmentin, then I would recommend performing a urine culture which involves sending a sample to the lab to determine what bacteria is present and what antibiotics will work against them. If the urine sample just has blood, then I would recommend taking an x-ray since sometimes we can't feel small bladder stones on exam. If all that is normal, then I think the next step would be to perform an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys to find the source of the bleeding. Hello, sorry to hear about Buddy. There are multiple causes of this and may include bladder stones that are not evident on x-rays, a resistant urinary tract infection, an enlarged prostrate, a prostate abscess, and less likely a bladder tumor. To further diagnose why he continues to have intermittent blood in his urine, he may need to have more diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and a urine culture. It is possible that she has a UTI that is not responding to the particular antibiotics that your veterinarian initially prescribed, which can be a problem especially in older pets. Your veterinarian should perform a urinalysis and a urine culture and susceptibility (if they haven't already) to see if there is an infection present and to what particular antibiotics it is susceptible. Another possible cause of Gracie's signs could be urinary bladder stones, which can cause irritation of the bladder, leading to frequent urinations that are often red-tinged. Most bladder stones are visible on abdominal x-rays, which may be recommended by your veterinarian. Other stones require an abdominal ultrasound to see. An abdominal ultrasound would also be able to detect any other abnormalities in the bladder, for example, a tumor. I recommend ensuring she has plenty of access to water, and having her seen by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Hazel isn't feeling well. The cephalexin is an antibiotic used to kill the bacteria in her bladder. Bacteria cause inflammation to the bladder wall and this can cause blood in the urine. I would expect to not be able to see the blood in the urine in 24-48 hours. However, sometimes blood is microscopic, so it may be there even if you can't see it. If it has been longer than 48 hours and you are still seeing blood I would talk to the veterinarian that gave Hazel the antibiotics about possible x-rays or an ultrasound to look for bladder stones. Bladder stones can cause constant inflammation to the bladder wall and the antibiotics alone won't help with the blood. If there are no stones, I would talk to the veterinarian about anti-inflammatory options to help decrease the inflammation of the bladder wall and stop the blood. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.
