Can peanut butter cause seizures in dogs, even without xylitol?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 4 years and 6 months old | 25 lbs

We got a peanut butter filled bone chew for our 25lb dog 2 days ago and he had a seizure this morning and then another one 5 hours later. We looked it up and found articles about a chemical called xylitol causing health problems but that wasn’t listed as one of the ingredients in the peanut butter. He has had seizures in the past about once a month or every other month. We were wondering if there’s other chemicals in peanut butter that could cause this?

No - there is nothing in peanut butter that should cause seizures, as long as the brand you're using does not contain xylitol. It's more likely that the seizures were due to the same underlying neurologic problem that has caused his previous seizures.

Hello. I am so glad you checked to make sure the peanut butter did not contain any xylitol. Xylitol can cause a dog's blood sugar to drop dangerously low, so it is important to avoid this. My dog ate peanut butter (no xylitol) and is lethargic. Is he okay?

As long as Scooby doesn’t have any medical conditions like pancreatitis I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Peanut butter without xylitol is not toxic, and although the one episode of vomiting may be related or you may see diarrhea it should be self limiting. If Scooby continues to vomit however you should see your vet.

Is xylitol in peanut butter deadly for my 5-month-old puppy?

Xylitol would be clearly labeled on the Ingredients label. I do not see xylitol on this label. I just cannot see the rest of the jar, so if it doesn't have xylitol written on it, it should be safe for Hachi. Typically the natural peanut butters are the one that contain the xylitol in it. It is always recommend to check any label before giving anything to your dog since multiple different things can have xylitol in it. Can my dog eat peanut butter, peanuts, or crunchy peanut butter?

Peanut butter is fine in small amounts. Too much fat causes pancreatitis in dogs. Never give Chance sugar free peanut butter, as it may contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. As for peanuts, they are fine in small amount, but again they are high in fat. Crunchy peanut butter is fine, small amounts. I hope this helps Ron!

Why did my dog vomit and shake after eating Kong peanut butter?

I bet that really scared you and I hope Coco continues to recover. I don't think its related to the peanut butter as this is a pet product. I would be most suspicious that Coco had a seizure or had a heart abnormality. I would take her in today to see the vet for an exam, EKG and bloodwork. This may diagnose the cause of the episode. Treatment will depend on the cause. I hope this helps!

Hello. Dogs do enjoy the same peanut butter we eat, but they do make peanut butter treats for dogs, too. If you do give Simba people peanut butter, make sure it does not contain the sugar alcohol xylitol as this is dangerous for dogs. You will only find this in sugar free versions of peanut butter.
