Is xylitol in peanut butter deadly for my 5-month-old puppy?

Hello. I am so glad you checked to make sure the peanut butter did not contain any xylitol. Xylitol can cause a dog's blood sugar to drop dangerously low, so it is important to avoid this. Too much PB for Chewy has the same risk as too much PB for us. It will make you fat. So, try to place no more than a teaspoon in the ball, & not a heaping teaspoon & do this only once a day. As long as Scooby doesn’t have any medical conditions like pancreatitis I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Peanut butter without xylitol is not toxic, and although the one episode of vomiting may be related or you may see diarrhea it should be self limiting. If Scooby continues to vomit however you should see your vet.

No - there is nothing in peanut butter that should cause seizures, as long as the brand you're using does not contain xylitol. It's more likely that the seizures were due to the same underlying neurologic problem that has caused his previous seizures.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you have the packaging see if it tells you how many milligrams (mg) of xylitol it contains or you can call the company and ask. Bentley would have had to ingest 2410mg of xylitol for it to be a toxic dose. I doubt that him licking a basically empty container would have enough to harm him. But it isn't wrong to double check. If the Brach's contained xylitol, it would say it on the label. Since the ingredients say sugar, it won't contain xylitol, so they won't get poisoning from this. I would be concerned they may have some stomach upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea. If you see that, a loss of appetite, or lethargy, have them seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

Hello. Dogs do enjoy the same peanut butter we eat, but they do make peanut butter treats for dogs, too. If you do give Simba people peanut butter, make sure it does not contain the sugar alcohol xylitol as this is dangerous for dogs. You will only find this in sugar free versions of peanut butter. It is likely this hard candy will be broken down in her stomach by the stomach acid, but the sugar from it may give her a tummy ache. I would check the ingredients of the hard candy to make sure there is no xylitol in it. That's because xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and if it does have that ingredient, she will need to see a vet immediately. Xylitol ingestion can be fatal. Otherwise, she should be fine aside from the chance of GI upset in the form of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Should you see that, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.
