My 12-year-old dog's paw wound won't heal and is getting worse?

This sounds like an infected interdigital cyst. These are common in dog’s paws. They usually need oral antibiotics to heal these infections, so I would take her in to your veterinarian for an exam and treatment. In the meantime you can soak the paw in an antibacterial solution, and use a cone to prevent her from licking the paw. At. This point, I would surgically explore that lesion. There may be a foreign body in there, there may be a small mass or tumor inside, but at least it should be surgically debrided. Debriding it will remove all of the dead necrotic tissue. It should be kept clean by doing daily bandage changes and your pet likely needs a different antibiotic. If this was a routine infection that was responsive to Cephalexin, it would be better by now.

Or perhaps it is not healing because Bini is licking at it constantly. I’d recommend an E-collar at all times for at least 7 days and talking with your veterinarian about adding a course of steroids to decrease swelling, inflammation and pain. If this really is a resistant bacteria, topical antiseptics such as chlorhexidine or betadine will be more effective. Soak the foot in a diluted solution of one of those once to twice daily for 5 minutes, then dry very thoroughly. Best wishes to you and Bini!

If this sore has persisted and does not seem to be getting any better despite your efforts to manage it, I would recommend Ace see his veterinarian soon. Your veterinarian may take a small sample of the area to determine what it is and if it is concerning or not. Treatment will depend on what the diagnosis is. If your veterinarian suspects it is infected, Ace may need to be on antibiotics or other medications as needed. I hope this helps!

Since topical medication hasnt healed the area up Cali may need oral antibiotics to help clear up the ulceration that is on the surface of her wart. You may also want to consider talking to your vet about having the mass removed since it is causing her some distress and staying infected. In the meantime the best way to help it heal and keep her from licking it is the cone. I'm sorry, I know she probably hates wearing it, and I don't blame her. I hope this helps. Bodie's lesions on his paw could certainly be related to an underlying environmental or food allergy that resulted in the development of a severe superficial and possible deep pyoderma, which can be difficult to treat if the bacteria present are resistant to normal antibiotics. Other potential causes could include fungal infections (depending on your location), and neoplasia (cancer). For lesions that do not respond to typical therapy with antibiotics and anti-itch medications (such as corticosteroids, Apoquel, Atopica), it may be necessary to perform a culture/sensitivity of the lesions to determine what type of bacteria present (if any) and what antibiotic it is sensitive to, or even a biopsy which could help rule-out certain fungal infections or neoplasia. I would recommend having Bodie re-evaluated by a veterinarian if the sores do not resolve to determine what the appropriate next step will be.
