Dog paw pads ripped from hot pavement: How long to heal and walk?

I'm so sorry to hear that Reaves and Marilyn are having such a hard time after their hike. Paw pads can take a while to heal and can be very painful. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine them to determine if they need any treatment other than what you are currently doing, to determine which pain medication will help them feel better, and also to determine the best way to protect their feet. Sometimes I will recommend commercial booties while paw pads heal, but sometimes I will teach owners to bandage feet at home if they are severely affected. Good luck! I hope they feel better soon. I would definitely recommend taking Daisy to the vet. She may need topical medication, very likely needs pain medication and possibly antibiotics as well. Burns on the feet can take a long time to heal but proper care from the start will help them heal faster. I hope Daisy feels better soon.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You are doing just fine. It looks like she just scraped her pad and the skin above it. It may take up to 3/4 weeks to completely heal. The damaged pad takes the longest to regrow. The skin is not a problem. I would only bandage it a few days and after that keep it unwrapped as long as she isn't licking it. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Yes, the skin on the paw pads grows quickly, so any minor tears or scrapes should heal in without complication, as long as they are not too deep! If the scrapes are deep enough to result in bleeding, Matilda should be seen by a veterinarian. Otherwise, they should heal on their own. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Billie! Paw pad lacerations take much longer to heal than other locations on the body because it’s a weight bearing surface. It can take 2-3 weeks. You will need to give it more time. Consider bandaging the leg and using medihoney on the wound. If you bandage the leg she needs to keep it dry and it needs to be changed every other say and every time it gets wet. Also strict exercise restriction: no running, jumping, playing with other dogs and being on a leash when outside will help healing. Good luck

If the scraps are superficial (first layer is scraped off) and it isn't a full thickness laceration then I would trim the flap hanging off (like a blister on our feet). Sometimes if the dog is painful it is best to see your vet for oral antibiotics and pain medications. I recommend soaking the feet in an Eposom salt bath twice daily and NOT walking them on hard surfaces (grass only) and keep walks short and to the point until the pads have healed. That has really peeled back, and likely will need to be removed. I would not try to remove it yourself, it could hurt him and he may bite in pain. I'd take him into a vet now to get this part of his pad removed, to get pain medication, and to get antibiotics. I hope this helps!
