Why are my dog's paw pads red and blistered after the kennel?

It could have been a thermal injury if the sidewalk was hot on recent walks. If you haven't taken Vinny on any walks recently, then I would recommend having him evaluated by a vet, some types of infections or autoimmune diseases can cause sloughing of the paw pads. Continue to make sure that Vinny doesn't lick at all. Don't try to pull of the dark part, as it is protecting the more delicate tissue underneath - it will fall off on its own. If you take Vinny outside, use dog booties to protect the pads. Don't apply any ointment unless directly advised by your vet.

Nugget may have blistered his feet from running outside or from chewing his feet from allergies. You have a couple of options. The first would be to take him to the veterinarian to be examined and to have the paw pad that is falling off trimmed away from the foot so it does not catch on anything in the environment. The second option would be to soak his feet in epsom salt soaks twice daily 10 minutes at a time and wait for the pad tissue to fall off on its own. I would also have him wear protective booties and applying a wound cream such as Sentry Wound ointment (can be found at Petco) while the feet are healing. Hello there and thank you for posting your question! It looks like Ford developed some blistered paw pads. If you cannot get her seen until No day, I would go buy a set of dog booties to keep her feet covered until Monday and if she starts chewing at the paw pads, you should buy a plastic cone to go around her head so she does not make it worse. You can try soaking the paws in some cool water to help relieve any discomfort she may have. On Monday, your vet may want to put her on anti-inflammatories and an antibiotic. It almost looks like Leo may have had an injury to one of his paw pads that has healed causing lighter than normal pad - particularly on the toes where there is a central pink area. This could also be his normal pigment even though his other pads don’t look quite the same. There are some skin diseases that could cause depigmentation of the paw pads but they usually also cause ulcers, crusts or peeling of the pads. A picture is not the same as an in person exam, so if you’re not sure or you’re still concerned it wouldn’t hurt to see your vet.

Ouch. Poor Skye. Paw pad burns can certainly happen on concrete in the summer. If she is very painful or a large area of the pad is missing she needs to see a veterinarian. If it's moderate you can clean with gentle warm water, apply antibiotic ointment and bandage her feet. Do not give any otc pain medication. Hello, and thanks for your question. It's difficult to tell in the picture where the injury is. I'm possibly seeing a small area with minor irritation on the edge of the metacarpal pad (the larger pad behind the toe pads), almost like a rug-burn type injury... If that's the case, it will be a bit sore until the tissue starts to heal, but there isn't much to do other than monitor for infection and protect it from further injury. You can apply a topical ointment such as neosporin, and sometimes they're more comfortable if you apply a sock or bootie when Blitz goes outside. Avoid long walks and running off leash for a week or so, especially on abrasive surfaces such as concrete or gravel. Monitor for redness, swelling, or discharge that might indicate infection. If you see any of these, or if Blitz seems uncomfortable enough to need pain medication, then it's best to bring her in to the vet. Of course, if there's further injury besides the suspected "rugburn" or scrape I described above, don't hesitate to question again with a description of the injury you're seeing, and maybe a close-up with an arrow to the injury in question... It appears as though the pads are just soft and the first couple layers are rubbing off. Nothing to worry about too much. I suggest you use a product to toughen up the pads. In the meantime, you can try using some booties when you hike to protect the pads.
