Dog paw poked by grass, now red and irritated. Should I see a vet?

Poor thing. I don't think you need to go to the vet right away unless Thor is constantly bothering at it or seems uncomfortable. You can try doing 5-10 minute epsom salt baths twice a day for 2 days first and keeping it nice and dry between the soaks, and making sure he doesn't lick it (an e-collar is the best way to do that). If it looks worse at any point, or still looks like this after 2 days, then it will be time for a vet appointment. good luck!

Yes usually there is an entry wound with something stuck in the paw. The picture looks like she has an infection between the toes. This is infected interdigital cysts. It can affect one paw or all four. Often they have some drainage and swelling. I recommend taking Willow to the veterinarian for an exam. They will look for a foreign body in the paw and if it's a paw infection they will prescribe antibiotics. You can soak the paw in warm epsoms salt solution for five to ten minutes. This will draw out the infection and increase the blood supply to speed healing. If Willow is licking this excessively please use a restraint collar so she can't lick the paw. I would definitely recommend taking Daisy to the vet. She may need topical medication, very likely needs pain medication and possibly antibiotics as well. Burns on the feet can take a long time to heal but proper care from the start will help them heal faster. I hope Daisy feels better soon.

That red bump in between the toes is suspicious for a grassawn/foxtail. I suggest you have her examined by your vet (not an emergency). In the meantime, you can try soaking the foot in warm Epsom salt water (10 minutes 3 times per day) to hopefully draw out any foxtail that may be under the skin.

I would recommend having him stand in an Epson salt bath for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times a day. You'll have to use the tub for a dog of his size, and make sure the water is just lukewarm and that he doesn't drink any. You can give him his dinner piece by piece over 5 minutes to keep his interest. Once you're able to, definitely get him in to the vet to determine the underlying cause of the sores. These type of injuries are often due to a puncture between the toes. Sometimes the thing that punctures the toes stays under the skin. This commonly happens with thorns and grass awns. In both cases, an infection develops under the skin and will not heal until the source of infection is removed. Lioh's injury does appear to be infected from what I can see in the photos and it will be best to take him to the vet for treatment. For now, you can try doing a twice daily foot bath with Epsom salts to help decrease the swelling and help treat the infection. Just make sure that he doesn't drink the Epsom salt water, or it will make him sick. I hope that helps and Lioh gets better soon.

Try soaking it in some warm water with Epsom salt if he will allow it-- this is easiest to do by putting the water and epsom salt in a plastic bag and putting his paw into the plastic bag. If you can do this for about 10 minutes or so, that may help if he has any debris , sticker, grass seed, etc that is embedded in the skin. If he is licking at it, be sure to put an Ecollar (cone of shame) on him. Dry it with a towel then allow to air dry, then you can use this product on it: If it is not improving within a couple of days, take him in to your vet. Thanks for asking PetCoach!
