My dog's paw hurts when twisted. Is it a sprain? Should I go to vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 55 lbs

Hi there, our dog leo has hurt his left paw. He doesn't whimper every time he moves, just sometimes when he puts it a certain way. We think it is a sprain... Should we take him to the vet. Its not sore to touch, we have gently pressed and moved the paw and it's just when it is twisted a certain way.

You can try restricting activity to just leash walks for a few days. Avoid running, jumping or rough play. If there is no sign of improvement within 24-48 hours or if there is swelling, bruising or severe pain then have Leo physically examined by your veterinarian.
