My dog is holding her paw up after being stepped on. Sprain or break?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 7 years and 9 months old | 12 lbs

My large dog stepped on my smaller dog this morning, and she’s been holding her paw up all day whereas she would normally sit it down. The only time she squealed was when I gently squeezed the lower part of her back leg, right before her paw starts. She will occasionally put weight on it, and doesn’t mind to sit or lay on the affected side. I was just wondering if it was a break or a sprain. She’s going to be 8 in April and she is a min pin and Italian greyhound mix

Poor Callie! It sounds like she was injured when your larger dog stepped on her, and she's in pain if she is holding her paw up all day. I would avoid touching it for now since she clearly doesn't like it. I recommend resting her for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My dog holds her leg up and cries when I touch her paw. Is it broken?

Clearly Tink is in pain if she holds her leg up in the air and she cries when you touch her paw. She is a little dog and if she feel from a high bed, I'm concerned she could have broken her leg. The only way to rule out a broken leg is with an x-ray from the vet. In addition, she needs pain medication which you cannot give her OTC. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The best thing to do for her is take her into a vet immediately to get this examined and treated. Please do that now. My dog won't put her back foot down, but she doesn't seem hurt.

If you’ve checked her paw and it’s normal she may be holding her foot up because she has injured her knee and doesn’t want weight on the leg. Knee injuries are common and when first injured dogs hold it up like you are describing. If it’s a knee injury it can heal with rest if the cruciate ligament isn’t fully torn, if it is torn then she may need surgery to repair it. I recommend leash walks only for potty breaks for a week. If she isn’t using the leg normally after that time then please bring her in for and exam and diagnosis. If she’s currently painful then certainly bring her in right away so they can find the problem and get her on pin medication.
