My dog has parvo. Why is his stool still watery and reddish pink?

I'm very sorry that Rio has parvo, but it's good news that his appetite has increased and the consistence of his poop has increased. The tarry consistence does indicate bleeding in the upper GI tract, so he's not out of the woods yet. It does take some time for a dog to fully recover from parvo, and it can be weeks before a dog is back to normal. The acute phase is between 7-14 days. A sign of how well a dog is doing is how well he is eating. If he is eating and there is no vomiting and diarrhea, then the prognosis is good. Make sure he does stay hydrated because dehydration is the number one cause of death in these dogs. Offer Rio small amounts of Pediasure using a syringe or small turkey baster. Give any medications prescribed by the vet, and if he starts vomiting, his stool gets very bloody, he stops eating, or he becomes extremely lethargic, rush him back into a vet immediately. If she's stopped having diarrhea, this is a good sign. I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.

Poor Scooter. I am so glad that she is doing better. All the signs you describe seems like she is improving. The tarry black stool looks like either digested blood or it could be a side effect of pepto if you gave her any of that. If she is eating and drinking and starting to become more active then I think she is on the mends! With her being so small, you could continue the pedialyte for a few more days until you are confident that she is feeling 100% better.

Some antibiotics may have this color. Pinkish feces are not normal, but I would recommend to wait and see if the signs are persistent or not. If they are another check up is likely to be needed as blood could be present in it. You can post a picture of it on the forum so we can see it and give you more specific answers. If Choko is recovering from parvo, you shouldn't see any blood in the feces, and it should resemble normal feces in color and texture. You would also see the dog eating, drinking, and not vomiting as well as having more energy.

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.
