My dog is recovering from Parvo and won't drink. Is Pedialyte enough?

Ten ounces of water per every 10 pounds of body weight per day is about average. So at 14 pounds she would need about 14 ounces of water per day to stay hydrated. This should be broken up into very small amounts throughout the day. If you are giving Pedialyte you should dilute it 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Pedialyte is not balanced electrolytes for dogs and it is has a lot of synthetic sweeteners in it which are not good. Plain water is fine to give.

You can offer the pedialyte in a bowl several times a day. If he is refusing to drink from the bowl then you can syringe 10-20mls every 2 hours or so into his mouth. Be sure to do it slowly so there is no risk of aspiration. You can offer him water at the same time as well. If he is significantly dehydrated however you will need to have fluids administered by your vet, either via IV or subcutaneously. I hope this helps. The poops look good for a dog with parvo. They should continue to get more solid as Oreo continues to recover. If he wants water, you can give him a bowl of water. I would only offer a few ounces at a time to avoid causing nausea. You can offer a few ounces of water or pedialyte every 2 hours. You can also start to offer moist food in small "meatball" sizes every 2 hours.

Just have water available for her to drink if she wants it. She may not be interested in drinking because you are giving the SQ fluids. The biggest thing that seems to help recovery in parvo cases is to get them eating as soon as possible. So, if you can try feeding her some canned puppy food that would be best. The chicken is OK but it does not have all the nutrients and vitamins needed to help her recover quickly. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It's definitely a good sign that she is drinking water. Even if they get adequate amounts of fluids IV, they can still feel parched and want to drink occasionally. This does not indicate that she is dehydrated and is good that she's helping to keep hydrated. The IV fluids, or other methods of hydration should still be given as directed by your vet though. It takes about a week or so for the infection to run its course. Ace may shed virus for weeks afterwards. A good percentage of puppies that survive the first 3 or 4 days of infection usually recover. Without a physical exam, we cannot say if he is recovering or not. Continue to medicate him as directed by your veterinarian. Make sure Ace is eating and drinking. You can offer unflavored PediaLyte or your vet can show you how to administer subcutaneous fluids. Be sure to sanitize or discard bedding, toys, bowls, etc. Keep him isolated from other unvaccinated puppies.

Hello. If Belle feels like drinking, then yes, she can have Pedialyte to drink. You can also try to get her to eat using some cooked chicken or hamburger, or even jars of baby food ( with no onions or garlic in the ingredients ). If she still refuses to eat or drink, I do hope you can have her examined by your veterinarian. She may have some infection or inflammation that is making her feel ill.
