My sick dog has parvo. Can I give him water? How much is safe?

You can offer the pedialyte in a bowl several times a day. If he is refusing to drink from the bowl then you can syringe 10-20mls every 2 hours or so into his mouth. Be sure to do it slowly so there is no risk of aspiration. You can offer him water at the same time as well. If he is significantly dehydrated however you will need to have fluids administered by your vet, either via IV or subcutaneously. I hope this helps. Ten ounces of water per every 10 pounds of body weight per day is about average. So at 14 pounds she would need about 14 ounces of water per day to stay hydrated. This should be broken up into very small amounts throughout the day. If you are giving Pedialyte you should dilute it 1/2 and 1/2 with water. Pedialyte is not balanced electrolytes for dogs and it is has a lot of synthetic sweeteners in it which are not good. Plain water is fine to give.

It is more likely to make him vomit. If he is at home, then he will need to drink to stay properly hydrated. Hopefully he has been prescribed anti-nausea medication to help decrease his vomiting. Is she is not having any fluid loss (diarrhea or vomiting) she should have about 40 oz in 24 hours. If she is having loss still then she needs the 40 Oz PLUS the amount she lost. 1/2 cup is 4 oz. so if no loss and you are doing 1/2 cup hourly for at least 12 Hours of the day you should be pretty good. No, do not stop her from drinking water, but instead of leaving full bowls of water out, try offering her just a few tablespoons of water every hour. If she starts being able to keep this down, you can gradually increase the amount that you're offering. The fact that she's still so thirsty may indicate that she's still quite dehydrated, despite the fluids under the skin. If you're unable to hospitalize her for IV fluids, you may want to ask your vet if they think she should be receiving a larger volume of the subcutaneous fluids under the skin.
