My dog is panting, tail tucked, and hair standing up. What's wrong?

Sounds like Bella may be in some pain, or may have an underlying illness or injury. Sometimes being startled or stressed out can also cause these symptoms to show, so trying to get her to a calm place where she can lay down and relax may help. If she seems very painful, doesn't calm down, or is having trouble breathing it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP so that she can be examined and the underlying problem found.

Poor Bow. These symptoms suggest that she either has anxiety from something that scared her or she is having a sudden pain response from somewhere in her body. If the panting episode is continuous and seems labored, she has dulled responses, +/- white or pale gums, or if she seems to be in pain, then I would rush her to the ER vet to have her looked over. However if she is alert, has a normal mentation (aware of her surroundings), panting and shaking are intermittent and not continuous, and if she slowly improves over the next hour as you try to slowly coax her out of her hiding spot, then I would wait it to until morning. Especially if she has a history of anxiety or a recent event (i.e. Thunderstorms, guests over, loud noises, etc) can be seen as a possible cause for her current state. I hope your fur baby is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Hopefully she just got spooked and will return to her normal self after she has time to settle down. Best wishes.

Non-specific signs like you are seeing are a little difficult to pinpoint the source of; shaking can be due to pain, nausea, anxiety, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian to see if they are able to find anything that could explain what is going on, and if any further needs to be done for her. These symptoms could be caused by a range of issues, including musculoskeletal pain, heart or lung disease, abdominal pain, heat stress or heat stroke, anxiety, impending seizures, etc. I would recommend that you keep a close eye on Bailey for the next 12-24 hours. If he develops additional symptoms, he should be checked out by a vet immediately. If he is just not back to normal within 24 hours, he should also see a vet.

Hello there, I'm sorry to hear that this happened today with Bella. You did the exact right things to do with an overheated pet. In the future, I'd avoid taking her in enclosed environments in the warm weather, or bring ice water to help with cooling if its absolutely necessary. Pets in heat stroke may experience weakness, vomiting, collapse, and unconsciousness. It doesn't sound like Bella experienced a true heat stroke and is in need of medical care since she is acting totally normal tonight. If she does experience any change in behavior, lethargy, or disinterest in food, I'd recommend having her seen by her veterinarian. I hope this helps. Tucking the tail and running are normally signs of fear in dogs - it sounds like something may have frightened her. She could also be in pain or not feeling well for some reason. If she doesn't begin to act more normal over the next few hours and you don't see any reason that she would be afraid, I would recommend having her examined by a vet to check for a medical problem causing her to act this way.
