Why is my dog shaking, panting, and not acting like himself?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 13 lbs

Hi, My dog is a mix breed maltese/poodle he is 18 months, I noticed yesterday that he is shaking & panting, but he eats & walk, but not as usual that he is active he only lay down, what is the symptom could be please help I am so worried..

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort.
A check up is needed if these vague signs last for more than 24hours.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Casper. Poor boy. He may be in pain causing the shaking and panting, or could be feeling sick. Unfortunately without seeing him in person, I can't narrow down what's going on. I think it's best to rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to potty on a leash and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If he's still acting this way in the morning, I'd have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

This is a sign of severe pain and may be an emergency. Please take Casper to a vet right away. He could have an acute abdominal problem or cardiovascular problem. Please take him to a veterinarian now.

My dog is panting and shaking and won't move. Should I worry?

These can be symptoms of many serious medical issues, anxiety, fear, pain, neurologic disease, infection, etc. I would recommend that you have him checked out by a vet to see what could be going on. After a thorough physical exam and discussion of his recent history, the vet may recommend diagnostics, such as blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to diagnose the cause.

Why is my dog panting and shivering in bouts, then acting normal?

Hello. Making any kind of assumption or diagnosis is very difficult just based on panting & shivering, but I can tell you this can be typical signs of pain & an elevated temperature. Since he has periods of normal behavior, my concerns is there is some underlying pain that JosLouis is experiencing. It could be from any area, so even if he quits the behavior, I would recommend having your vet check him out, just to make sure. Hope all is well soon. My dog is shaking and panting a lot, but seems normal. What's wrong?

I'm sorry to hear that Lola is not acting herself. Shaking and panting could be signs of several different things such as pain, anxiety or early signs of illness. If she's acting normal otherwise, I would watch her closely. If she goes back to her normal self tomorrow, there is probably nothing to worry about. If she continues this tomorrow, especially if other signs of illness develop, I would take her to a veterinarian. Please do not give her any over the counter human medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals. If you feel that she is in pain, it would be best to take her to a veterinarian tonight.

All these signs are very concerning and point to a possible viral infection or metabolic disease. You need to take your dog to a veterinarian or PetER right away as he may be having a serious infection that needs to be tended to. Distemper comes to mind, a liver shunt and/or meningitis.
