Why is my 8-year-old dog panting, shaking head, and scooting her butt?

It’s possible his anal glands are full/uncomfortable. If they are bulging on either side of his anus when you palapate from the outside, then that definitely could be the case. I recommend bringing him to your vet for a rectal exam/anal gland expression and to check his ears. He likely will need and ear cleaner and a steroid/antibiotic/antifungal/antiyeast ointment such as otomax/kometamax/posatex if he has an ear infection. A few days of an allergy medication called Apoquel may help as well. Good luck!

It is difficult to know exactly what you mean but you may mean head bobbing which may be due to something wrong with her neurologic system. It may be something else of course. The scooting may be due to anal sac issues. I would recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check what may be wrong so that therapy is recommended accordingly. It would be a good idea to take a video of this to be able to show to your veterinarian. An ear infection can cause panting, because of the pain and discomfort, it is possible that this is causing this. If the ear is not under treatment, I recommend taking her to the vet and get the infection treated.

If this is the case and his presumed ear infection responds to the ear drops then the expectation is that these signs you describe will improve. He may be having a lot of pain when he wakes up doing this. If he hasn't yet been to a vet he needs to be seen as soon as possible. If the pain makes him shake his head, he could shake it too hard and break a blood vessel in his ear and cause a hematoma which needs surgery to correct. Plus, ear infections hurt, and he needs relief as soon as possible. Your vet will do an exam, labwork and will probably prescribe antibiotics and drops for the ears.

Oh dear, poor Deja! Head shaking in dogs occurs most commonly due to an ear infection (which is often the result of underlying allergies). Similarly, licking and itching can occur due to allergies, the onset of a skin infection, due to external parasites (fleas or mites), or endocrine issues (hypothyroidism is one example). Deja's increased water intake could be due to a number of other issues, including a urinary tract infection, kidney disease, diabetes, a pyometra (uterine infection), or Cushing's disease, among others. At this point, it would be best to take Deja to her vet for further evaluation. Her vet will be able to perform a physical exam, evaluate any ear discharge under a microscope, and perform blood testing to get to the bottom of these issues.
