Why is my dog panting when it's not hot? Is it an ear infection?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old

My dog has been panting for the past hour, calm panting though. It's not hot and she has water so why? She does have an ear infection so maybe that?

An ear infection can cause panting, because of the pain and discomfort, it is possible that this is causing this. If the ear is not under treatment, I recommend taking her to the vet and get the infection treated.

Panting is a quite generic sign. It can be caused by pain/discomfort but not so commonly an ear infection (unless very severe) can cause such an acute pain. Stress and respiratory problems can cause panting as well. A check up at your vets will clarify the underlying cause.

Ear infection can be treated anyway and if already on treatment the efficacy of it could be checked and eventually modify.

Just coming into heat would not normally be associated with panting (although mild behavior changes are possible). I would keep her cool and well rested with plenty of fluids - if she develops any additional signs of fever such as reduced appetite or lethargy I would recommend an urgent care visit

A heatstroke in the UK at this time of the year is not really possible, so it might be something else. possibly pain or discomfort. if the panting at rest continues you will have to take her to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked.

Antibiotics can cause an upset stomach leading to a decreased appetite, but I'm concerned that it's excessive and Simba has other symptoms going on. If the ear infection is severe, it could cause these symptoms but I can't say for certain without seeing him in person. I'd take him into a vet immediately to get checked out.

My dog is panting, drooling, and lethargic. Is it an emergency?

Please take Brutus to an emergency vet or veterinarian right away, if you have not done so in the meantime, as these could also be signs of bloat (GDV). This would be a life-threatening emergency. An ear infection does not cause such severe signs. Panting points to pain, drooling points to a gastrointestinal problem, and considering it is a large dog. a GDV is not unlikely.

My dog is panting and shivering after ear drops. Is it the ear drops?

If this is the case and his presumed ear infection responds to the ear drops then the expectation is that these signs you describe will improve. Hi. It does sound like Piper has another ear infection and the cleaning may not be enough to kill what's causing the infection. Ear infections are usually caused by yeast or bacteria. There's also a chance there may be something like a grasss seed stuck in her ear. I would recommend getting her to your veterinarian whenever you have a chance so they can prescribed the appropriate medications to kill whatever is in there. She may also have underlying allergies so if her ears don't clear up after treatment that would be something also to consider addressing with your veterinarian.

Hello. Panting is not normal for cats, although they will pant for short periods if it is extremely hot, or they are very stressed out. If he is panting when he is indoors, or during the cooler parts of the days, this is an indication to have him examined by your veterinarian as quickly as possible. Panting could be an indication of a lack of oxygen if your cat is anemic from fleas, mites or intestinal parasites, or he could have a lung infection like pneumonia, or even heartworm disease.
