I would take him to the vet immediately. What you are describing sounds like an emergency. He could have bloat (where his stomach flips) or an issue with his heart and lungs. Since he is painful and uncomfortable it most likely is a serious issue not just stress.

I do think something is wrong and should be investigated as soon as possible. I generally recognize illness as more serious if it's causing a very food motivated dog to stop eating and if there are lethargy and breathing changes. Bulldogs are more predisposed to developing aspiration pneumonia as well so this is a big concern if Layla continues vomiting. I would have her seen by a veterinarian ASAP.

Bulldogs do tend to have trouble breathing due to their synotic nares an elongated soft palate. In addition, if they are overweight that contributes even further to breathing problems. If he is actually struggling to breathe, I would recommend you take him to the ER rather than waiting until Monday. He may have an upper respiratory infection, a heart condition, or the respiratory issues that this breed has have become extreme for him. The ER veterinarian will do an examination, and probably some chest x-rays to see if there is any heart condition or primary lung issue. That will help lead us to the correct diagnosis and treatment. There are surgical interventions for the stenitic nares an elongated soft palate that this breed has. That may be in his future if that is what the cause is for his breathing at this time. Please take Brutus to an emergency vet or veterinarian right away, if you have not done so in the meantime, as these could also be signs of bloat (GDV). This would be a life-threatening emergency. An ear infection does not cause such severe signs. Panting points to pain, drooling points to a gastrointestinal problem, and considering it is a large dog. a GDV is not unlikely.

Difficulty breathing and panting could be a sign of heart disease or respiratory disease. Congestive heart failure would be the most common heart problem, while pneumonia, bronchitis, pleural effusion/fluid in the lungs would be some common respiratory problems. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible if you feel Rex is having trouble breathing.

If you think he is in respiratory distress it would be best to have him examined to ensure his lungs are clear. If you think his gum color looks ok and he is otherwise doing ok, I would consider placing a humidifier next to him to see if this helps. If this does not help and he continues to have an increased respiratory rate I would rather you get him examined by a veterinarian and not wait any longer.
