My bulldog is hyperventilating and uncomfortable. Is it serious?

Bulldogs can get overheated very easily and this can lead to painting. Other more serious causes of continuous panting are internal problems (i.e. embolism, primary lung disease, heart failure, etc). I would recommend taking him to your nearest veterinarian if he continues panting for more than 30 minutes or so or if the panting is seriously debilitating and putting him in distress. Also if his tongue turns blue this is considered a very serious emergency and he should be taken in right away. You can offer his some water, but if he refuses don't force him. Also make sure he is in a nice cool place that is free from stress or commotion to help him calm down. Bulldogs have a hard time breathing under normal circumstances, so the less stimulation the better.

I do think something is wrong and should be investigated as soon as possible. I generally recognize illness as more serious if it's causing a very food motivated dog to stop eating and if there are lethargy and breathing changes. Bulldogs are more predisposed to developing aspiration pneumonia as well so this is a big concern if Layla continues vomiting. I would have her seen by a veterinarian ASAP.

Oh my. Poor Brody : (. Because this was repetitive I suspect that your pet may have an underlying heart condition. Compressing his stomach may have inadvertently increased blood flow to the upper part of his body. It's hard to say for sure without examining him and listening to his heart for any murmurs or arrhythmias. Therefore I would recommend taking him in to your vet for a proper examination. Hi. I am sorry to hear that biggie Paws is having trouble breathing. Unfortunately breathing issues can become an emergency very quickly. Bulldogs do tend to have trouble breathing due to their synotic nares an elongated soft palate. In addition, if they are overweight that contributes even further to breathing problems. If he is actually struggling to breathe, I would recommend you take him to the ER rather than waiting until Monday. He may have an upper respiratory infection, a heart condition, or the respiratory issues that this breed has have become extreme for him. The ER veterinarian will do an examination, and probably some chest x-rays to see if there is any heart condition or primary lung issue. That will help lead us to the correct diagnosis and treatment. There are surgical interventions for the stenitic nares an elongated soft palate that this breed has. That may be in his future if that is what the cause is for his breathing at this time. If she seems to be attempting to vomit without producing more than a little foam and she also seem painful, distressed, or her abdomen looks distended I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian right away to rule out GDV or bloat. A productive cough can also look like a dog is attempting to vomit, and can be caused by an upper respiratory infection like kennel cough or allergies. This might not be quite so emergent, although her breed would put her at higher risk for complications.

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Sumo. I am concerned that he may be in quite a bit of pain. Panting is a strong sign of this. The accumulation of gas in the intestines from either infection or inflammation may be the source of this pain as well as the tense abdomen. Sumo needs to see a veterinarian soon. If this is a volvulus or stomach twist, his life may be in danger, but regardless of the cause, he needs to seen tonight. I hope all is well soon. These symptoms can be caused by a variety of different problems, including heart disease, bloat (gastric dilatation and volvulus), liver disease, or internal bleeding. Many of these problems are extremely serious, so I would recommend taking Missy to your nearest emergency clinic immediately. The veterinarian there can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.
