My cat is agitated and breathing fast after flea treatment. Vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old | 11.9 lbs

I used hartz ultraguard pro on my cat about 3 and half hours ago and my cat because very agitated and she continues to scratch ans lick her fur. Her abdomen moves very fast like and so does her heart beat. At some point she started breathing heavy with her mouth open, she did it about 3 or four times. I am very concern because she has never reacted like this to a flea treatment. I don't know if this is grounds for me to rush to an animal hospital. Right now she finally calmed down.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fast respiration, panting, agitation are well known side effects of some flea products. This happens particularly often when a cat mange to lick and ingest some of the product. These symptoms are usually mild and go away after 1-2hrs. If your Fennekin was acting like that, I suspect it was reaction to the flea treatment. If she is calm now, you need to monitor her at home for the next few hours. However, if she continues to breath fast or breath with open mouth, please take her to your nearest vets without delay.
