My dog has pannus. Do I need to use eye drops in both eyes for life?

These are good treatments for pannus and it definitely looks like Sora is afflicted with this condition. Unfortunately, pannus is quite difficult to treat and the eyedrops and sunglasses will help to keep it from getting worse, but may not help it get much better. I have seen a few dogs that responded very well to treatment though and had significant improvement. I would not expect it to ever be completely normal again unless surgery was done to remove the black part. Pannus (chronic superficial keratitis) is an inflammatory disease of the cornea, which seems to be related to an autoimmune disease. Treatment is not expensive and it is usually medical, involving eye drops application, usually dexamethasone, prednisolone, or cyclosporine (or similar active molecule).

The good news about pannus is that it's not painful, but as you've unfortunately discovered, they can lose significant vision, and most of the time the loss is irreversible. Using prednisolone acetate eye drops will hopefully help to keep it from progressing, but there's unfortunately no surgical cure for the disease. Protecting the eyes when outside with Doggles (dog goggles) will help as well. You might consider referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist to discuss the disease indepth.

Eyes are so hard to take pictures of. However, Pannus is a common eye problem in the German Shepherd. It causes a significant change to the cornea. Usually is starts on the outside corner and works it’s way in. Sometimes it is dark brown pigment and sometimes it is more like blood vessels or white. I am suspicious that this may be what is causing the problem with Krystal. I would highly encourage you to seek a second opinion or go see a veterinary ophthalmologist. Pannus can be very aggressive, and usually needs lifelong medications to keep it in control. Since there is a lot we don't know about auto-immune disorders, and how they are related to one another, we ideally would not be breeding any dogs with any form of auto-immune diseases. Pannus can be difficult to treat in some cases, and it's possible that Brody needs an additional topical medication that contains a steroid, or trying a medication that is stronger than Optimmune. Another possibility is that he also has dry eye which is common for his breed. I would recommend rechecking with your veterinarian if the eye discharge is new or the lesions seem to be progressing. Hopefully you will be able to get the lesions under control, but if not I will tell you that most dogs adapt really well to losing vision - it just takes a little time. Dogs most commonly lick their feet due to itching, and an environmental allergy would be the most common cause. If Brody's feet are red you should talk to your veterinarian about the possibility of allergies.

Hello, thank you for your question about Kavi. Overall I would say the need for preventative medication in the other eye is somewhat dependent on what the underlying cause of the glaucoma was. Additionally, taking it to account the current pressure in his remaining eye would be important in deciding the need for these ocular medications. If the pressure is high normal or has been trending upward, I think these medications are beneficial. If you would like more information or would like more information about the underlying cause/current pressure in his eye you could get a second opinion from another veterinarian.
