My dog has pannus, eye discharge, and licks feet. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Lhasa Apso | Male | 10 years old | 15 lbs

My vet told me my dog has pannus I'm trying to keep him comfortable by using sterile eye wash to clean the nasty smelly goo he gets all the time and applying optimune once a day we live in the high desert of southern California my dog is a lhasa apso I can tell he's not as confident as he use to be and his vision is being effected what can I do for him, he licks his feet alot does this mean he's in pain?

Pannus can be difficult to treat in some cases, and it's possible that Brody needs an additional topical medication that contains a steroid, or trying a medication that is stronger than Optimmune. Another possibility is that he also has dry eye which is common for his breed. I would recommend rechecking with your veterinarian if the eye discharge is new or the lesions seem to be progressing. Hopefully you will be able to get the lesions under control, but if not I will tell you that most dogs adapt really well to losing vision - it just takes a little time.

Dogs most commonly lick their feet due to itching, and an environmental allergy would be the most common cause. If Brody's feet are red you should talk to your veterinarian about the possibility of allergies.

I am so sorry to hear that Brody is experiencing these problems with his eye. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems red and has discharge. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Brody to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Brody to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration.

Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian.

Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort.

Dog pannus: Are eye drops & sunglasses good? When will eyes improve?

These are good treatments for pannus and it definitely looks like Sora is afflicted with this condition. Unfortunately, pannus is quite difficult to treat and the eyedrops and sunglasses will help to keep it from getting worse, but may not help it get much better. I have seen a few dogs that responded very well to treatment though and had significant improvement. I would not expect it to ever be completely normal again unless surgery was done to remove the black part. My dog has chronic itching, paw licking, and sneezing. What can I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can see that Boomer's feet are red and the fur is discolored from chronic licking. These signs are consistent with a condition known as atopy, or allergic dermatitis, which can be due to a food sensitivity. In order to confirm that this is due to a food sensitivity, you should only feed Boomer the novel diet. He shouldn't have any human food or other treats. You can also try an omega-3 supplement to maintain the skin barrier and moisture. There are also anti-itch shampoos available that can help calm the itch and keep Boomer more comfortable. My dog has red eyes and licks paws. Is it separation anxiety?

It's not separation anxiety. It sounds as Louie is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in dogs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time. antibiotic eye drops are prescription only, there is no way around getting to the vet in order to get them.

Hello, and thanks for your question. Pannus is typically a bilateral condition (although symptoms can be worse in one eye), and once diagnosed, treatment is for life to minimize the recurrence of further symptoms. I would recommend continuing treatment in both eyes indefinitely unless your vet is directing otherwise. Hope this helps!

Why is my dog itching, licking paws, and has red, dry skin near eyes?

It sounds like Maddy may have allergies. I would have him seen by a vet immediately, as he could have scratched his eyeball while rubbing at his eyes. Scratching his eyeball can lead to infection and ulcer formation. Maddy needs his eyes examined to make sure that he hasn't scratched his eyes, and can diagnose if he has allergies and give him medication for it.

Why does my dog have recurring paw sores and won't stop licking?

Sores on the paws can occurr for many reasons. If it is a chronic issue, underlying allergies or a thyroid disorder are likely the issue. These conditions weaken the skin’s natural defenses and allow bacteria and yeast to set up opportunistic infections. The photo of Sammy‘s foot shows a round, pink lesion. It almost looks like some sort of a mass from the picture. I recommend to have Sammy visit his veterinarian to check that area out. If it is a mass, it should be aspirated as skin masses that look this way are suspicious for a cancerous skin growth called a mast cell tumor.
