My dog has pancreatitis. How long until she starts feeling better?

Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

The sooner you get pancreatitis treated the better for the pet. 48 hrs is not the worst response time but then again within 24 hrs is best. However, if you did respond within 48 hrs and proceed to go forward with aggressive treatment now for his pancreatitis, then his chances of making a full recovery are increased. Some pets require hospitalization, IV fluid therapy, pain management, antibiotics (if indicated), etc. While others can be treated by sending medications home with the owner. If Jackson is not eating well and his lab findings as well as physical exam findings suggest that hospitalization would be in his best interest, then I would high recommend considering that course of treatment for him. If he has not had an ultrasound exam yet, this may be the time to have one, in order to check out whether he has an abscess or tumor on his pancreas. By now he should not be in pain anymore, especially since his body functions have returned to normal (no vomiting, no diarrhea, and eating and drinking.).

If she is on medications that were prescribed by your veterinarian for treatment of pancreatitis, then yes she should continue to receive her medications as long as she is eating. Pancreatitis is generally a painful condition so it is recommended to ensure that she receives pain control medications while her pancreas improves. Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Make sure you are feeding him a low fat diet. If his appetite is still not great ask your vet for antacids and antinausea medications. Pancreatitis can also be painful. Besides supportive care Chester likely just needs time. I wish you the best of luck and a speedy recovery!

I am very sorry you are dealing with these issues and differing medical approaches to Zoe's care. The short answer is that pancreatitis is a disease which can be approached in many ways, and none of the advise given is wrong. Only different opinions. I personally prefer hills ID low fat for pancreatitis or boiled boneless chicken breast and steamed rice. Pain relief medication, medication for diarrhoea and also anti-nausea medication are all very helpful medications to treat pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be a chronic disease and dogs need a change to their diet for a week, months, to even for life. It depends how well Zoe's pancreas heals in the next few weeks. I personally have never had to surgically treat a pancreatitis case, and find medical control the best course of action. The cases I have seen usually present with acute signs which require a short hospital stay to stablize. The dogs then go home with some degree of chronic pancreatitis which may or may not present with flare-ups and return visits to the hospital. I hope this is helpful and that Zoe feels better soon.
