My dog has painful penis discharge and won't lay down. What's wrong?

Chico could have a urethral prolapse, an infection or some type of trauma to that area. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Without treatment that tissue could become dead/necrotic, he could have trouble urinating which leads to other issues like kidney failure as well as long term damage like scarring. Do not give him any human medications as it can be toxic to dogs. Keep him from licking at the area and remove and discharge with a warm, moist, clean cloth.

I would be most suspicious Jack is in pain. Pain can come from anywhere but the most common reasons are spine issues like pinched nerves or compressed discs, chronic pancreatitis or hip/elbow arthritis. I recommend to have Jack examined by the veterinarian since this is the only way to begin figuring out what is happening and causing him to hurt. In the mean time, you can rest him so not strenuous activity and short walks (15 minutes) only. You can also start him on a joint supplement for dogs but the main treatment will begin once you know the underlying cause. I hope this helps.

Hello. With the chronic nature & non responsiveness to medications of this condition, I would be suspicious of a foreign object high up in the fornix of the sheath. It can be something as tiny as a piece of plant material like a grass awn or cedar chip or a tiny piece of stick. It is generally pretty easy to do the exam under anesthesia, but sometime it requires the use of a rhinoscope or bronchoscope to really get a 360 degree view of things all the way back. However, those signs are rather non-specific and while I agree with you that something is likely wrong with him, further work-up would be needed to know what is causing him to be unwell. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Likely diagnostics include bloodwork and radiographs if he appears to be in discomfort. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Jude! I am very worried about Jude! I would take him in today for a recheck. I would ask for full blood work, urinalysis, and belly X-rays. Maybe collect a urine sample to bring with you. I would consider also checking his clotting times. He could have a UTI, bladder stones, crystals in his urine, immune mediate destruction of his red blood cells or platelets. I would also be sure they extrude his penis from the prepuce to evaluate the penis itself. I hope this helps and I wish Jude the very best!

I am not sure what this area truly looks like. I would try picking hip up with back against your stomach and chest and having someone else snap the photo of his genital area. If there is green discharge and pain then he likely has an infection. Hydrogen peroxide should be stopped immediately, because in pets this can actually cause the normal cells to die off on the skin. You can try using Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water or Chlorhexidine 3% diluted with water to antiseptically cleanse the area. Soaking him in a warm water Epsom salt bath for 5-10 minutes can also help alleviate some irritation and inflammation. I would also visit your local pet store and purchase an e-collar to place on him so that he can't continue licking the area and causing further irritation and pain. Hopefully this will help maintain him until he is seen by your vet on Monday. Poor guy. I wish you all the best and hopefully the vet can clean the area well, flush out any debris or foreign material that may be lodged in the penile sheath, and then place him on medications (i.e. antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications) to help resolve this. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Are you sure that the bed isn't wet form him licking his penis? If he has an infection of his prepuce or penis he may lick a lot. I would have a Vet examine the skin of the prepuce and see if there is an infection. We treat with antibiotics and prepuce flushing. I hope this helps and I wish Mars the best!
