My dog has a painful leg graze from the groomer. What helps?

Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. This may be enough to allow for healing. Keep the area clean and dry. If it doesn't heal or if it grows or spreads, have Barnaby physically examined by your veterinarian. He may need antibiotics or further diagnostics, such as a fine needle aspirate or biopsy, if it is a lump or mass.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bogart. The only thing at home you can try is having him wear an E-collar. This will prevent any licking causing further damage from self trauma. It may allow the skin to heal. If this is unsuccessful though, he will need to see a veterinarian. The area could be a mass on his leg (benign or cancerous) or he could have what is known as a lick granuloma. I hope this information helps!

A topical product, such as Vetericyn, can be used after cleaning. You can find it in the local Petco. Hello, this looks like a local irritation. If he wears a harness, you may need to adjust it or leave it off for a couple of days. Rubbing a small dab of 1% cortisone cream on the area twice a day should help, but stop after 72 hours, or sooner if the area becomes more irritated or redder. Poor Lucy! This does look very irritated and she may have developed an infection in the skin which would make her even more uncomfortable and itchy. If she didn't do well with the cone, I would try a small shirt or a baby onesie to cover the area so she can't cause further damage to it. I would keep it clean by using a gentle antiseptic such as Hibiclens or dilute betadine (diluted to the color of weak tea). After cleaning, dry the area and then apply a thin film of triple antibiotic ointment. You can do this twice a day. You can also put a little hydrocortisone cream on it to help with the irritation. If you do this for a few days and it is not improving, I would recommend taking Lucy to the vet. Some infections are so deep that just topical treatment won't get rid of them and they need oral medications. I hope this helps and that Lucy gets feeling better soon!

I am sorry to hear about your dog! I would ask your vet if they can also prescribe a pain medication for him if he seems very uncomfortable. It also looks like his hair could be matted over the area which can be painful, so he may need to have his vet clip the fur in this area.
