My dog's painful ingrown nail: Should I trim it or wait for the vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 20 lbs

My dog has a nail that has grown out long and it has grown sideways.. It is very painful for him to walk. I tried to trim it, but I cut a small piece of and it seems to have made it more painful. My very isn't open until Monday and I just didn't know if I should try and cut more to try and fix it or leave it?

I would not try to clip it more and just leave it until Monday when you see the vet. Should it become very swollen and ooze pus or your dog whine a lot (pain) you should take Charlee to an emergency room where they will treat this according to the type of injury, give him some pain medicine and possibly antibiotics if there is infection.
