My dog is in pain, has diarrhea, and can't get comfortable. Emergency?

If she is a small breed dog, neck or back pain are common sources of pain. The muscles that line the spine can spasm causing the dog intense pain. In worst case scenarios, pressure can be put on the spinal cord resulting in neurological problems. If this is not the case, abdominal pain from GI upset or even constipation could be the source of pain. Her examination should tell the doctor the source of her pain so that treatment recommendations can be made. Keep her very quiet up until her appointment this afternoon. Dehydration isn’t usually painful. It makes dogs lethargic and they don’t want to eat or drink. If he’s in hat much pain I’d be concerned about an injury, pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction. You are correct that he’s also at risk of dehydration if he’s not eating or drinking normally. I recommend a veterinary exam soon so he can recover quickly. It sounds like your dog is very uncomfortable or even painful, probably in his belly from your description of his symptoms. The diarrhea could be caused by any number of things; intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection, even being constipated will sometimes manifest as diarrhea because liquid feces is all that will get by the impacted fecal material. It could be as simple as a dietary indiscretion, meaning he might have gotten into the trash and eaten something that didn't agree with him. If he continues to have loose stool, or starts vomiting, loses his appetite, acts lethargic, and/or develops a fever, get him in to be seen by your vet right away as this could indicate a more serious problem.

It sounds as Sawyer is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. if he can't get up it's an emergency, i would recommend taking him to the vet urgently, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotic course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Hi ! When he goes outside does he pass anything at all ? If he doesn’t I would recommend to have Oaty checked over. He is a young dog, he might have eaten something that caused an obstruction or partial obstruction in his tummy, or get hold of a bone that now is causing him pain when he tries to go to the toilet. I think a full clinical examination is needed together with a complete clinical history. We can then have a shorter list of differential diagnosis and the vet will be able to prescribe an adequate treatment. Hope this helps !

I'm sorry to hear that Panda isn't feeling well. It is difficult to determine if his diarrhea is related to Rimadyl, ingestion of the rubber toy or stick, parasites, a virus, or other issue. Given all of these possibilities and the fact that his abdomen is tight and he has been straining for a bowel movement, I do recommend taking Panda to to his vet for evaluation. The vet will be able to perform an exam to palpate his abdomen and may recommend abdominal x-rays. Try to withhold food for the next 12-24 hours. If his vet appointment is more than 24 hours away, you can also begin to feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning him back to his normal diet over another 5-7 days. I'm sorry to hear Breeze isn't feeling well. I wouldn't say it's an emergency but diarrhea is pretty uncomfortable and I recommend getting medication to remedy that. I would see if she would eat the boiled chicken and rice to help settle her stomach.
