My dog is still in pain after surgery on Carprieve. Can I give more?

The dose of meloxicam is not toxic for a dog this size. I am unsure how much Carprieve he received as you just state "half a tablet". There are multiple milligram strengths of carprieve. The big concern with these is when you give multiple NSAIDs together you could cause a stomach ulcer. Be on the lookout for vomiting / lethargy and if you see anything, I would get Steel in to a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

It is generally not recommended to use these medications more frequently than how they are recommended as that can result in undesirable side effects such as gastrointestinal side effects with carprofen and significant sedation with gabapentin. For that reason, it would best to wait till the morning if that is what was recommended by the prescribing veterinarian. If you are asking if these two medications can be given together 4 hours apart then the answer would be yes. Good luck!

If they are outdated they will not likely cause any issues, they just may not work as well as they normally would. According to the photo it looks like they technically expired 11/2019. I would give her 1.5 tablets twice per day. Please still take her to your vet for an exam. In an older dog with known joint issues it is best to do so. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Tramadol is an opioid meant to alleviate moderate pain, however there are research papers now that determined it is not that effective. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (like aspirin, but for dogs) which is given for certain types of pain such as arthritis. However Carprofen is excreted via the kidneys and if it is to be used, the dog receiving it needs to have a small blood test to verify that his kidneys are working properly. Also carprofen can cause stomach ulcers in some dogs. So unless your vet prescribes these medications for your dog, please do not give them. However, should your vet prescribe those medications for your other dog, you can tell him that you have them and then be informed of the proper dosage to give.

Legally, a pet must be physically examined by a vet before any treatment can be prescribed or recommended. Rimadyl can be used for any muscular or joint inflammation or pain, so it is probably the right choice for Westley. If you get in touch with your local vets, they should be able to advise about the dose for Westley. You will also find Rimadyl dosage on the leaflet, that should be provided with the tablets that were prescribed for Winston.

I suspect Bon Bon is still in a bit of pain. You did the right thing by calling his vet for advice. Yes, it could be true because he hasn't had two full days of pain relief that he still may be a bit painful. This can be normal. Give it a few more days on the medication to see if that helps him. I wouldn’t recommend it -carprofen may not be safe for dogs that have underlying medical conditions like a sensitive stomach, kidney or liver disease. Older dogs are more likely to have an issue like this. If Goose was prescribed carprofen in the recent past it might be a little safer but otherwise I’d recommend talking to your vet first. Sadly there is not another over the counter pain option that I’d consider to be safer so if you feel he’s in significant pain you may want to consider seeing a vet tonight.
