My arthritic dog is limping. Can I give her expired Carprieve?

I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! No medication should be given after the expiration date. The expiration dates are determined because medication begins to degrade and become ineffective after the expiration date. Some medications also become unsafe in addition to being ineffective. Do not give Marley expired Rimadyl and contact her vet to have this prescription refilled, if needed. I hope that all goes well!

Hi there. No, I would NOT give any extra doses of this medication. Carprieve (carprofen) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. These drugs are very effective for pain and inflammation and are commonly used in dogs, but using more than the recommended dosage can cause serious side effects such as stomach ulcers and internal bleeding. If you feel that Marcus is still painful even with the prescribed dose of his medication, I would recommend calling your veterinarian when their office opens in the morning. He/she can prescribe an additional pain medication for Marcus such as tramadol or gabapentin that can be given along with the Carprieve for additional pain relief, if needed.

I wouldn’t recommend it -carprofen may not be safe for dogs that have underlying medical conditions like a sensitive stomach, kidney or liver disease. Older dogs are more likely to have an issue like this. If Goose was prescribed carprofen in the recent past it might be a little safer but otherwise I’d recommend talking to your vet first. Sadly there is not another over the counter pain option that I’d consider to be safer so if you feel he’s in significant pain you may want to consider seeing a vet tonight.

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. Your veterinarian should refill the rimadyl or there are also several generic equivalents than may be less expensive. No, I would not give the Deramaxx to your dog. Since it was prescribed in 2015, it's likely expired now and is not safe to give to him. I recommend resting your dog. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Have him seen by a vet tomorrow.

Hi there. As long as Ellie is otherwise healthy, rimadyl is fine to give at the labeled dose. She may have a sprain that will resolve, but I would make sure you rest her and if the limp does not improve take her in when your vet opens. I hope that helps.
