Dog's carprofen not working. Can I give gabapentin 4 hours later?

There are no drug interactions between omeprazole, carafate and carprofen however, don't give them all together. You would want to give the carprofen either 1 hour prior or 1 hour after giving the others. Carafate and Omeprazole given at the same time as carprofen will inhibit it's absorption. Hope this helps. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. Carprofen and gabapentin can be used chronically if necessary for pain control. Carprofen controls pain and inflammation while gabapentin acts on neurological pain. If they are to be given chronically then bloodwork needs to be monitored especially for carprofen. It can have serious side effects on the liver and kidneys. Typically a blood sample is drawn before starting and then a month after use. From there bloodwork is usually monitored every 6 months. There will not be a comparable natural or over-the-counter medication. Joint supplements are available and some have been proven to slow the progression of arthritis. However, being supplements they are not regulated by the FDA and there is quite a bit of variation between products. They typically only help in mild cases. I hope this information helps!

Generally, we don't expect that these four-a-day medications are given exactly at six hours and it's understandable/okay to have a longer (two extra hours or so) period between pills overnight. Tramadol is an opioid meant to alleviate moderate pain, however there are research papers now that determined it is not that effective. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (like aspirin, but for dogs) which is given for certain types of pain such as arthritis. However Carprofen is excreted via the kidneys and if it is to be used, the dog receiving it needs to have a small blood test to verify that his kidneys are working properly. Also carprofen can cause stomach ulcers in some dogs. So unless your vet prescribes these medications for your dog, please do not give them. However, should your vet prescribe those medications for your other dog, you can tell him that you have them and then be informed of the proper dosage to give.

Rimadyl can be used for any muscular or joint inflammation or pain, so it is probably the right choice for Westley. If you get in touch with your local vets, they should be able to advise about the dose for Westley. You will also find Rimadyl dosage on the leaflet, that should be provided with the tablets that were prescribed for Winston.

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. Gabapentin may be given with or without food so it doesn't matter that she is NPO. If you normally hide the medication in food you would need to give her the medication by placing the pill directly down her throat. Good evening! As both carprofen and deramaxx are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, you are correct that they should not be used consecutively. I would withhold all medications until reaching out to your regular veterinarian or a poison control center (aspca or pet poison control) to discuss if any further treatment needs to be considered.
