Where is the best place for a vet to inject oxytocin in my dog?

Hi, the injection needs to be administered subcutaneously so some areas are better than others, where the skin is lose. It is very important for vaccine to be administered correctly. Hope this makes sense.

Some doctors do vaccinate there but others vaccinate in the shoulders or the hips. The location in dogs varies and as long as the vaccine is properly handled and administered, it will be effective. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I know giving injections is daunting but I bet you are already doing a wonderful job. I like to use the skin behind the neck or between the shoulder blades. Pinch it up to make a "tent". Stick the needle in the center of that tent and parallel with the body. If you are using an insulin needle, you could be able to go all the way to the hub. Afterwards, the fur shouldn't be wet in that area. If it is then you may be putting it in the hair and not the skin. If you are unsure, you could always schedule an appointment at your vet clinic for someone to WATCH you do it so they can give you any helpful hints on what to do differently. If they don't have a time available for when the actual insulin is due to be given, just ask them to put some saline in the syringe and you can inject that for the demostration. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Willow. I assume your veterinarian gave her a shot of Oxytocin at 9 am. Usually, this will initiate contractions within 30 minutes, if not, we may repeat the injection one more time ( assuming no puppies can be felt in the external birth canal). If it has been several hours & no puppies have been born then it is probably time to consider that Willow needs a C-section. I hope all is well soon. In order to give it subcutanelously, the skin should be lifted to form a tent. At the base of the tent, the needle should be inserted at close to an angle parallel with rockey's back. If the injection was done intramuscular accidentally, there is not likely to be any significant side effects. The vaccine will still be absorbed appropriately. Hope this helps.

It is difficult to say whether or not this is a concern for you without knowing exactly what is in the syringe - I'd recommend contacting the veterinarian who prescribed the medication and/or contacting your own physician. You can try spreading some canned food onto a plate and giving it to Dustin to distract him while you're giving the injection. It usually takes dogs awhile to lick food off of a plate. Between the shoulders is usually the easiest spot to give a subcutaneous injection.
