Is my dog's Parvo vaccine injection subcutaneous or intramuscular?

Hi, the injection needs to be administered subcutaneously so some areas are better than others, where the skin is lose. It is very important for vaccine to be administered correctly. Hope this makes sense.

If most of the vaccine got under the skin, it will still be effective, assuming it has been shipped, handled, and reconstituted properly. Because they can be finicky vaccines, I always recommend having your vet vaccinate. Of course if you choose to vaccinate your pet yourself, follow the reconstitution and handling instructions exactly. Temperature, and using the vaccine right away is crucial. Also know that vaccine makers will pay for parvo treatment if your pet has been vaccinated by a veterinarian at the proper intervals. Of course, no matter how you choose to vaccinate Cookie, be sure that she stays away from dog parks, pet stores, and anywhere else that other dogs are frequently found. In fact if you can keep her in a back yard or using the same little area to urinate/defecate that is best. I recommend this for all pups until they are fully vaccinated. Thank you for submitting your question regarding the puppies. I'm sorry to hear that they have parvo. I believe you are referring to subcutaneous fluids. These are fluids that are given under the skin as opposed to intravenously. This allows it to be done out of the hospital. The fluids help to keep the puppies hydrated in the face of ongoing fluid losses through continued vomit and diarrhea. Your veterinarian will need to provide the fluid bags, supplies and instruction on how to administer the fluid as well as appropriate doses for each pup. There are several types of fluids that can be used on this will be based on the needs of the individual puppies. I hope this information helps!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Injection of a vaccine that is supposed to be given intranasally can produce local skin irritation and inflammation. I suspect Sunshine may develop a small lump at the injection site, that should disappear within a few days. I don't think there will be any more serious harm to your puppy, however I could not find any clinical report detailing reaction to subcutaneous administration of this vaccine. Please, keep an eye on Sunshine at home for the next 12-24hrs. If she starts showing any worrying symptoms (panting, breathing problems, lethargy, weakness, facial swelling) take her to your local vets right away. Obviously, the vaccine will not produce any immunity against kennel cough and it should be repeated in 7-10 days

Adequan analogues have been tested with subcutanteous use by the FDA http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/Products/ApprovedAnimalDrugProducts/FOIADrugSummaries/ucm116139.htm however the official site for Adequan states that it should be given via IM injection via their insert http://www.adequancanine.us/pdf/AdequanCanineInsert.pdf. There is very little research/mixed results when searching for efficacy of adequan given SQ versus IM. It may be best to speak with your veterinarian about why they give it this way and if they have documentation to support it.
