What can I put on my dog's open, bleeding lump to prevent infection?

an open and infected tumor should be removed. If it happens to be a lipoma (fatty lump) then this should be curative. If it happens to be another type of tumor, then your vet should do an x-ray of the lungs to check whether there are metastases. I think you should get a second opinion from another veterinarian or a veterinary oncologist.

It looks like the wart just got inflamed or traumatized. I would not worry about it. Cleaning it and applying Neosporin is perfect! Great job! Flushing it with peroxide once, just keep it out of his eyes, and keeping it clean for today is the best you can do. You can apply some Neosporin on it to help keep dirt out of it and make sure he doesn't scratch it. It will be fine until the morning for your appointment

If you are noticing an odor, it's might be infected. This bump could be an infected cyst, a foreign body trapped under the skin or a ruptured tumor. It looks infected and is most likely an abscess. It is not an emergency but she should be seen in the next couple days. In the meantime you can just keep the wound clean with some mild soap and warm water, dry it and then you can put some Neosporin on it. Keep her out the water for now.

You shoudl protect it from licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You shoudl keep it clean and dry but only wash it if it gets dirty. Do not use hydrogen peroxide. You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil to it twice a day and rub it in well. Just so you know, a histiocytoma is the most likely cause based upon his age but a cancerous Mast Cell tumor can look exactly the same. It typically affects older pets but young pets can get it.
