My dog's lump is bleeding. How to stop it and clean it without a vet?

If Jack has had this lump for a while, then it is likely a tumor and these can easily bleed sometimes. They do tend to bleed for a while, but don't worry, because he will not lose too much blood and it will stop eventually. You can help stop the bleeding by taking a clean rag or gauze and apply pressure to the wound. Hold it there for at least 3 minutes and try not to move, because movements will keep the blood from clotting. Do not wipe the wound either. After the three minutes, gently release pressure and check to see if it's still bleeding. If it's still bleeding, apply pressure again for 3 minutes. After it's done bleeding, it would be good to have a veterinarian check the lump if you are suspicious of it being a tumor. It's not an emergency, but good to have it checked sometime soon, so the vet can determine what type of tumor it is and if it needs to be removed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Sable to the vet to look at the growth closer and find out what it is. The vet can stick a needle in it and look at the cells under a microscope to determine if it’s cancerous or not. Because the tissue/skin is fragile it likely won’t stop bleeding and may need to be surgically removed. Flushing it with peroxide once, just keep it out of his eyes, and keeping it clean for today is the best you can do. You can apply some Neosporin on it to help keep dirt out of it and make sure he doesn't scratch it. It will be fine until the morning for your appointment

This looks like a possible mass that has a really good blood supply or even a blood blister. I would try applying a cold compress on it for 5-10 minutes, if a vet is not readily available. If you can get the bleeding to stop tonight I would leave it be for now and then get this checked in the morning by your vet if possible. However if you cannot get the bleeding to stop even after the cold compress and perhaps even placing a make-shift wrap around it, then an ER vet visit has to be considered to stabilize the area. However, an ER vet visit is usually only needed if it is gushing blood, for fear or too much blood loss. If it is oozing then it likely can wait until morning before seeking veterinary assistance. It may be bleeding because he's been picking at it. Apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding, then put a bandage on it to protect it. I would apply gentle pressure to the bump to stop the bleeding. Do not wipe the blood away from the bump as that disrupts the clotting process. Continue to apply pressure until the bleeding stops. I hope this helps.

You shoudl protect it from licking by having him wear an elizabethan collar at all times. You shoudl keep it clean and dry but only wash it if it gets dirty. Do not use hydrogen peroxide. You can apply a dab of organic coconut oil to it twice a day and rub it in well. Just so you know, a histiocytoma is the most likely cause based upon his age but a cancerous Mast Cell tumor can look exactly the same. It typically affects older pets but young pets can get it. When you can, I recommend to have the mass tested. Financing may be an option through Scratch Pay or Care Credit. I hope this helps.
