My dog ate meat cooked with onion. Is her diarrhea from toxicity?

Causes of diarrhea can be from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), new treats/dog food/table food, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance. If Rosebud is fully vaccinated and has been thoroughly dewormed and has had stool samples checked then I would with hold food for 12-24 hours. Do not take away water unless vomiting. After the fast offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to not eat or starts to vomit, she needs to see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rosebud a speedy recovery!

Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In this case, dietary indiscretion is possible given that petals were ingested. Assuming the petals were not from a toxic flower, you could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Moose evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. If there is concern that these petals were from a toxic flower/plant, he should be evaluated right away. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Such a small amount of onion is unlikely to cause any toxic effect (linked to anemia and weakness after a few days) - it may be hamburger meat or other rich food which has triggered the vomiting. I would recommend giving oral rehydration fluids (pedialyte) and feeding small but frequent meals of a very low fat, bland diet such as boiled skinless chicken, brown rice and canned pumpkin (or canned specialist intestinal low fat diet). If symptoms persist a full vet check would be required

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! The amount of onion and the size of Paddy should not cause any clinical symptoms associated with toxicity. You may see GI signs such as vomiting / diarrhea. I would monitor for now and if you notice any signs such as lethargy, inappetance, vomiting blood, etc., I would have a veterinarian examine Paddy and test her blood. I hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food. It is unlikely that there was enough onion present to cause a problem, but eating that much pizza will likely cause some gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea. He could also develop pancreatitis. If he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, isn't wanting to eat, or seems lethargic, please take him to your vet for treatment. In the meantime, withhold for at least 12 hours, then offer small amounts of. a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice for the next couple of days. Onions will cause oxidative damage to the red blood cells which can result in anemia. If the onions are going to be an issue, it will be a few days before you would see this, and generally would present as decreased appetite and lethargy. If those symptoms are noted, get him in to your vet for bloodwork.
