My dog has diarrhea, upset stomach, won't eat. What's happening?

Hello! Thank you for posting your question! If you haven't tried pepto bismol, you can give that a try and give Rosie 2tsp every 8hrs. I would also begin a bland diet such as boiled chicken breast and rice until the diarrhea resolves. You can also try and add a probiotic such as Fortiflora. I would not give the pepto bismol for more than 24 hours. If the diarrhea is worsening and not resolving, i would bring a stool sample to your vet to have it tested. There are other medications that your vet will habe to help resolve the diarrhea. If Rosie ate something she normally doesn't eat, this could have caused a dietary indiscretion. Poor Rosie! It sounds like she is not feeling well. Just like with humans, there are many potential reasons that a dog may have an upset stomach. It can range from bacterial overgrowth, to intestinal obstruction, or even to pancreatitis. I recommend to have Rosie see her veterinarian and the doctor will begin the process to figure out what is wrong. You can try offering her a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This may not help however. It’s always best to be safe. Gastric upset, or gastroenteritis, can be caused by many different things including toxins, raw meat, bones, bacterial infections, viral infections, or simply a food that doesn't agree with the body. Other possible causes include IBD, food allergies, and cancers in the gut. If she has a bit of diarrhea and GI upset, but is otherwise normal, eating/drinking well, and has good energy, then she likely just ate something that upset her stomach. I recommend that you feed her a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice, in small frequent meals for the next 3 days. After this re-introduce a good quality kibble. If the diarrhea gets bloody, she stops eating, is vomiting, or weak and lethargic, then bring her to the vet for bloodwork and x-rays. Best of luck with Daisy! I hope she feels better soon!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Daisy. Contact your local rescue groups, humane societies, low-cost clinics in your area and seek help. Persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lack of appetite are emergent clinic signs due to fluid/electrolyte losses. This leads to dehydration, weakness, and further downward deterioration unless the vomiting stops and the appetite returns. I would advise taking Daisy to your vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated. Many causes are possible including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs aren't supposed to), other dietary problems, gastrointestinal inflammation/infection from various sources, toxin exposure, foreign body ingestion, GI ulceration, side effects from drugs or products used, or even problems outside of the gut including pancreatitis, liver/kidney problems, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and perform a thorough exam. Once done, a diagnostic plan and preliminary treatment plan can be started. Most likely a minimum database of fecal/blood/urine tests and some x-rays will be advised. Treatment will be focused on the cause but early treatment could include fluids/electrolytes, anti-nausea/vomiting medicines, acid blockers, etc. Good luck with Daisy.

Causes for vomiting and not eating are: viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney problems, cancer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), ate something that is stuck, toxin ingestion, new food/treat/table food or the broth. Any new food could cause an upset stomach. i would with hold water for 6 hours and food for 12 hours. If Odie continues to vomit during the fast he should see a Vet. If there is no vomiting for the first 6 hours, offer small amounts of water. If he holds down the water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals at the 12 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or continues to vomit he needs to see a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and i wish Odie the very best!

It appears that Bebe is having some form of gastrointestinal irritation. This can definitely make a dog feel nauseous and stop eating. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Bebe has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
