My dog's poop is olive green. What causes it? Should I see a vet?

Changes in stool color can happen, especially if there was a change in the diet. I would not be concerned about a one-time color change if Peggy Sue is otherwise normal. If she has a poor appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea, then she should get checked out by a vet.

No, I do not think you have to take her to a vet. A dog's poop changes color depending on the type of food it eats. Brown is good! Your dog's food may have had a different color added and now it shows in the poop. However if your dog's poop turns into a clay or yellow color, with or without diarrhea, then you should take Luna to a vet for an exam as this could be a sign of a liver problem. But all different shades of brown are ok.

The green color is likely dye from something your pet ingested. I recommend monitoring the stool to see if it changes back to normal color within the next day or two .Chances are it will. Also monitor Pickles a bit more closely to make sure he isn't ingesting something he shouldn't have. If he starts to have any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or decreased appetite, then its best to have him seen by your local vet. Also, if there is any chance Pickles could have gotten into some kind of rat poison/bait, then he should be seen right away. It wouldn't be a bad idea also to go ahead and give Pickles a probiotic to support a healthy GI tract moving forward. Stool color can be altered by changes in food, especially if colors are added by the manufacturer, intestinal parasites, and intestinal bleeding. Intestinal bleeding can be caused by ulcers, parasites, or conditions such as IBD. This changes the color of the stool due to products of blood digestion, which are black to dark green in color. Kidney conditions can cause gastric ulcers as certain toxic compounds build up in the body and alter acid production of the stomach. Hi ! Sorry to hear that Stell is not well. If she is still bright and eating well, she might have a bit of an upset tummy. You can try her on a bland diet of white meat and rice or Hill’ s gastro-intestinal formula for a couple of days, and some probiotics such as Canikur or Protekin Prokolin and see if things settle over the next 3-4 days. If she should still pass soft feaces then it’s best you bring in a feacal sample to your vet to be examined for parasites and bacteria.

You should continue to monitor these changes for worsening bowel movements or diarrhea, loss of appetite and vomiting. That is odd and unfortunately, it's a little hard to know what that is. It looks like there are flecks of more solid material in there which makes me lean toward vomit or a discharge from her vulva. Green coloration is always worrisome because it can signify significant infection or rat bait poisoning (which is green/blue or a combination). I do recommend to have her examined today to be safe. Show the vet your photo. Check the house and yard for any rat/mouse bait. Look for anything she could have gotten into that could be this color. Syptoms will not show up for a few days. A serious infection in the uterus called a pyometra can also cause a greenish discharge.
