Can a Tamaskan be an off-leash hiking dog for active owners?

You will have to train her to stay with in certain limits. It is best to stay with her at all times while on a leash. The more comfortable she gets, the more she will want to explore. You can teach her to come when called. When you call her, tug on the leash a little to help her catch on then give her a reward or treat when she does. You can continue to enforce this behavior as she gets older. You can keep the leash on her but not hold it to increase the distance to get her to respond. There is never a guarantee she won't run off, but teaching her to come on command can help greatly. As long as the weather is not too cold then she can sleep out side with shelter but I would make sure she is trained and older before letter loose outside

I've trained my dog off leash by taking several group obedience classes. Then you can practice with her in a contained area, with distractions and with a trainer to supervise and give pointers. It's often difficult to train this without starting in a controlled situation. Working on come in your yard and house and walking beside you on a loose leash through the streets and past other dogs is where to start. Be patient this can take quite a while to get your dog reliable off leash, especially since she is still a puppy. I would not recommend taking a dog off leash when in a public area, ever, to be honest. You never know when a strange dog will run up, Noble could get distracted and run into a street, find and eat something that he shouldn't, etc. He will be much safer and healthier in the long-run staying on a leash. Teaching him a strong "heel" and requiring him to walk next to you are also good behavior things to work on.

Beagles most certainly DO have a great sense of smell. Because of this, when off lead they can catch a scent that interests them and follow that rather than staying near you or listening to your commands. I would be nervous about letting most beagles of lead because of this. Before considering this, I would do a lot of training with Maverick in a fenced area practicing basic recall and recall with distractions.

Damon is still a puppy so I do not recommend not leaving him off of a leash. You can always get Damon a gentle leader to help with the pulling of the leash. Some dogs no matter how you try cannot be trained off the leash. There are a lot of dangers when you have your dog off leash and it is recommended to keep them on. I would also recommend checking with local leash laws since most places you are not supposed to have them off leash. Any dog can be a service dog, it does not need to be recognized by the AKC. They are highly intelligent dogs, so they may be good for the training required in order to have a dog become a service dog. I hope this helps!
