My injured dog on pain meds hasn't pooped in days. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 8 years and 8 months old | 90 lbs

My 90# pit mix has injured both ACLs and cannot walk. She is on pain meds and is not eating much. However, she has not pooped for 4 days. She is terrified to go out with the towel sling. She did pee yesterday but today we cannot get her outside. Any advice? I think she has to go but, is afraid.

Some pain medications can cause constipation and decreased appetite. You should discuss this possibility with your vet. The vet may also want to examine Bella to determine the level of her constipation. She may need a mild laxative for a few days to make it easier for her to have a bowel movement.
