My dog won't eat, is weak, and has diarrhea. What should I do?

Togo doesn't eat much ..and looks weak.. also his stool is liquid..how do I increase his appetite?

Togi sounds quite sick, and you need to have him treated by a vet. The underlying illness causing his loss of appetite, weakness, and diarrhea needs to be treated so his appetite can increase. Please take him into a vet now.

Hello, sorry to hear about Toffee. He may need to be seen by a veterinarian to make sure that he does not have an infection with Parvovirus or has ingested something which is causing an obstruction in his GI tract. If these are both negative, then he may need to have anti-nausea medications and deworming to hopefully treat his vomiting and nausea.

Please monitor for persistent vomiting, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, or lethargy and contact us if you note any.

Depending on the cause of Toffee's fever and diarrhea as well as the treatment he is taking, it could take a week or longer for him to recover. If he's very ill, it could take him a couple of weeks before he's back to normal. I do not recommend force feeding, He could easily aspirate the food, leading to aspiration pneumonia. If he won't eat, the best thing to do is take him into the vet who can give him nutrients via an IV line as well as medication to try to stimulate his appetite. Best of luck.

Any abrupt change in behavior or attitude is a sign he's not feeling well, and without an exam from a vet there's no real way to know what's going on and therefore, how to treat it. It sounds like she needs to be examined and treated by a vet right away. She may be getting dehydrated and need some fluids, either subcutaneously or intravenously. Your vet can also run some blood work and other tests to help determine the cause and evaluated the function of all her organs. It is very concerning that she is not eating and is very weak. I don't think this is something that should be treated at home with OTC medications. If she has a gum infection then she may need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Call your vet or take her to an emergency clinic for treatment. Hope she feels better soon!

Loose stool and lack of appetite could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have Tootsie seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible for diagnostics and treatment. In the meantime, if she is not eating well, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding her small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken once it has cooled. You can also add in plain boiled white rice. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from Tootsie to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis. With Toby bring such a young dog and being so ill I would highly advise that you take him to a vet who can hospitilise him on fluids. If he is vomiting and having loose motions I imagine he is very dehydrated.

My 2-month-old puppy is weak and won't eat. What should I do?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to hear that Tootsie is not feeling well. At 2 months of age, this has me worried that he may be battling an infection such as Parvo virus. He may also be dehydrated if he is weak and is likely in need of fluid therapy for rehydration. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would have him parvo tested and have his blood tested to see if there are any other abnormalities. Subcutaneous fluids would certainly help him feel better and he may be so dehydrated the IV fluids may be the best option for him. It is difficult to say without examining him to see how severe he is. I hope this helps!
