Why is my dog not eating, has tartar, and rolls in grass after meals?

Poor Layz! If her breath smells terrible and is eating less than usual, I would suspect that she may have a dental problem. Dogs need regular dental care just like humans, and if they don't get it, they can develop severe gingivitis, a tooth root abscess, or a rotten tooth among other conditions. She would be eating less because it's painful for her to eat. I would give your vet a call today to set up an appointment for her. The vet can examine her mouth, and if they feel that there is a dental problem, will want to do a dental scaling, cleaning, and polishing. It's best for her health to have this checked out as soon as possible, as dental problems that are left untreated can lead to further health problems such as abscesses on the liver and heart infections. Hello, this could be due to a number of issues, including her known heartworm disease if she is symptomatic and it's making her feel unwell. A few common reasons for a young otherwise healthy dog to have a waxing and waning appetite with no other symptoms would be a low grade chronic pancreatitis, mild IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), or a food sensitivity. If you haven't done a complete bloodwork panel with your vet, I suggest starting there. Your vet can discuss a feeding trial with prescription food - I would recommend trying an easily digestible food that's easy on the stomach such as I/D or EN (there are lots of acceptable brands of prescription food, these are just a few common ones), and if that doesn't help then do a trial of a limited ingredient or hydrolyzed diet for food sensitivity. Hello, sorry to hear about Karl. It sounds like he may have increased thirst and is looking for more water (licking the air, eating snow, not eating but drinking). This could be associated with a form of kidney disease. Alternatively, the air licking and excessive drooling could be an indication that something is abnormal within his mouth (tooth root abscess, salivary gland abscess, or even a mouth mass). This can usually cause dogs to not want to eat, or they may prefer to eat softer foods, but still be able to drink. You may look in his mouth and see if you note anything obvious, but ultimately, he may need be thoroughly evaluated by a veterinarian to look for any diseases within his mouth or his kidneys. Another reason for dogs to not want to eat and cause them to eat grass could include any GI disease such as a dietary indiscretion. This however tends to also carry signs of vomiting and/or diarrhea. Poor Lucy, if her breath has very suddenly gotten worse then it would suggest to me she has either developed a bad mouth infection or is dehydrated. Considering she also has mucus in her faeces and s eating grass it sounds like she may have a gastrointestinal upset which makes me think dehydration is likely. There are always many possibilities for a gastrointestinal issues, cancer is a possibility but it is far down the lost when compared to more common issues such as indiscretion or infection. It does sound like she is pretty poorly though, to be honest with you aside from encouraging her to eat and drink you can do little for her at home. If she is unwell as an owner you have a duty of care to get her medical attention so I would encourage you to try and find a way to get her to a vet asap. Many simply treated ailments can become much more serious if left too long.

Changes in weather (suddenly hot or cold) can also affect appetite, as well as some issues such as parasites, etc. Scheduling a vet visit and fecal exam can rule out any serious issues, and your vet can take a weight and body condition score to monitor Benny's weight (he looks very good in the provided pictures.) As long as he checks out healthy and is a good weight for his size, I would not be too worried. Most vets will also let you come in free of charge for regular weigh-ins if you'd like to use that to monitor him as well.

She may have an upset stomach, maybe she ate something she shouldn't have, swallowed something that is causing an obstruction, parasites, or an infection of some kind are possibilities. I recommend getting he seen by your vet, especially if she isn't feeling well. Your vet will do an exam, labwork and possibly x-rays. Based on these findings, they will be able to give you a better idea of what is going on and give you treatment options.
